    Goodbye All!

Almost 10 years on this forum and it's time to say goodbye. My S has separated from USN and is off to his next adventure. Over the years I learned to appreciate USNA and all it offers. Particularly enjoyed the home football game we attended each year. I still follow Navy football. I hope I...

    Goodbye all!

S has left the Navy and is now a civilian with an extremely high-tech civilian job. 5 year USNA reunion this weekend. What a ride it has been. No further need to stay tuned into USNA issues. This board has provided a wealth of information regarding USNA and the USN. Thanks to all...

    Parents Weekend

If you are flying into town, rent the smallest car possible that will still fit you and your party. My W and I always rented a subcompact or smaller. When trying to park in Annapolis, you will thank me for this suggestion. You might find street parking, if you're lucky, but I guarantee you...

Is USNA acceptance rate slightly unethical?

It's all malarkey. Years ago my D was waitlisted at Williams on April 1 and then denied about 3 weeks later. Problem is she was early accepted at an Ivy the previous December 15th and emailed Williams (and other schools) on the 16th withdrawing her applications. I'm sure Williams counted it as...

Possible Increase to Military Service Obligation

My S is leaving after 5 years and 4 months. I never had the "why" discussion with him, but something turned him around from making it a 20 year career. Getting close to the end and looking at civilian jobs and/or graduate school.

    Induction Day Tips

My S who was a plebe in 2010 always said that Plebe Summer was like a really weird summer camp with really strange rules, but if you follow the rules and do what the detailers tell you to do you will get along just fine. If you try to fight it, you will have trouble. Don't ask why, just do.

Proceed to open Navy Federal account?

There are multiple branches in Annapolis. Our S opened his account at one of the branches the day before I-Day.

    Uniforms at funerals/memorial services

My S (2010) is constantly asked to wear his dress whites to non-military summer weddings. He always declines. He just says he doesn't want to take anything away from the bride.

    Communication on Subs

Boomers and fast attacks have different types of deployment. Boomers tend to go out for 90 days or so at a time with no port stops, although they do occasionally swing by certain ports to pick up supplies. They tend to leave w/o notice and return w/o notice, although we usually get a call from...

Not sure who gave me a nom...

My son received a letter fr0m our then-Congresswoman the same day he received his acceptance package. The next day he broke his collarbone while snowboarding.

    Offshore Sailing

My S was a member of VOST for 4 years. In the summer you will do a lot of racing but you will still do your cruises, etc. You will not do a YP cruise. You will miss most formal parades as you will be sailing up and down the Severn flying spinnakers as a colorful backdrop. He missed Herndon...

this DoDMERB qualification process is no joke

Way back in the day (2010), my son broke his collarbone snowboarding the day after he received the big, thick envelope from USNA. It was no big deal. New x-rays when healed, a note from his doctor and he was ready to go. He is now serving in subs...

Please Post something about Plebe Summer that is Positive

My S (2014) always remembered Plebe summer as "A summer camp with really weird rules. If you follow them, you're fine, if you fight them, you'll have problems." S also had same 2 roommates for 4 years.

    Permit to Report time

An alternative - we parked at the municipal parking structure on Gorman Street off Main Street in downtown Annapolis. It's an easy walk to the Yard (5 minutes). It is a pay structure, but we were able to go back and forth very easily to leave things in or get things from the car. Whatever...

    Plebe Parents Weekend

We brought brother and sister. We all stayed at Sponsor's condo. (Sponsor was a college fraternity brother of mine.) We all saw his room and then it was off the Yard as quick as possible. Had a great time hearing all about Plebe Summer. S spent a lot of time playing online games with his...

    Clubs at USNA

A different perspective as you prepare for Induction Day

My S (Class of 2014) told me that Plebe Summer was like a summer camp with really weird rules and that if you try to fight it, you'll have problems. His advice to others that went subsequent to him was "go with the flow."

    Ivy League Vs. USNA

Just saying - an Ivy interview has very little impact on the accept/deny decision by the school. My D has done them for years and she has always thought that she is there basically to weed out the clinkers that don't pop up on the application and recommendation letters. Why not do the...

    Back from CVW

"Any particular piece of info that you found interesting in the briefs/panel discussion and wouldn't mind sharing here?" Funniest question I ever heard was from a hopeful Plebe-to-be in March 2010 was in one of the joint prospective Plebe/parent panel discussions - "Do you spend a lot of time...
