2/C: Does Study Abroad hurt my chances for Pilot? NROTC

My unit has had plenty of midshipmen study abroad and still get aviation. Things that actually matter: ASTB, GPA, PT scores. @Go Dores! is the authority though, so I will defer to him.

Navy hunting pirates off the coast of Africa

Very cool ships - half civilian crew (driving the ship) half Navy crew (fighting the ship). Incredibly modular and not too expensive (built off an Alaska class tanker hull design).

Advice for doing well in ROTC

I would advise against this. Many ROTC units will use text/calls to contact you if they need you and if you don't have your phone on you you're SOL. Rather, be disciplined in your use of said phone.

    NROTC more strict than AROTC?

Hey, "less stressful"????? My time on a paid vacation in San Diego, where I got off at 1500 everyday and had the weekends entirely free was incredibly stressful. Do you know how hard it is to decide where to go to dinner each night, especially when you're getting paid enough to go anywhere you...

Place has gone to &^%# already

Some of my fellow MIDN were shocked to learn that I don't need to iron my uniform/shine my shoes every uniform day. I tried to explain to them that shoe trees and GOOD hangers employed directly after taking said uniform off would prevent wrinkles/creases/preserve the look but I think it fell on...

Being an AROTC CDT & the Mando Covid Vaxx

This seems like a great question for your chain of command. Also, even if they don't collect your medical records, integrity would dictate that you should get vaccinated if you ordered to do so, regardless of whether or not they collect proof. I can easily imagine a situation in which they at...

    Myopia Medical Waiver

A phenomenal post by @Capt MJ (as always). I'd add that service to one's country doesn't stop at jobs with the federal government. Sometimes the people serving the most are doing so at a community level e.g. firefighters, teachers, nurses, etc. It may be completely different path from the one...

How to be Competitive in ROTC

It's definitely taken into account, I remember someone telling me that each tier is worth .2 gpa points (i.e. 3.1 tier 1 = 3.5 tier 3) but don't quote me on that (I'd imagine this could also change between schools, as at some schools above a 3.0 in some majors is nearly impossible). Class rank...

    Which language should I learn?

    中文很有用,可是太难了。假如你想学中文,你最好天天练习和复习,可是去台湾学中文比较好。(mods I promise I'm not a chinese spy)

At what point is one considered a midshipman?

You're a midshipman once you take the midshipman oath at your respective unit. Usually happens at the end of whatever NSO your unit puts on.

Don't even bother with the kindle. She won't be allowed to keep it/use it, and wouldn't have time to read anyways.

    AF decisions

I for one am glad I caught this thread in time. I was this close to switching to Marine Option, but now that I know recruiters sometimes don't give the whole picture I'm pretty sure I won't have the opportunity to fight a dragon. At least I'll get to fight some aliens with Rihanna this...

    NROTC NSI Assignments 2021

1.) Not really, but ranks/general orders of the sentry might be helpful. On the other hand, you're going to spend a lot of time reading gouge anyways so it's probably not necessary. 2.) Be prepared to be tired and bored. Don't be surprised if there are days where the majority of it is spent...

    NROTC NSI Assignments 2021

Probably an email, either from NSTC directly, your new unit, or both. If you feel like they're not giving you enough information/cutting it close, welcome to the Navy Also feel free to ask any questions about NSI, I'm one of the few MIDN who has actually gone (and made it back in one piece!)

    What do I do now?

One thing to heavily, heavily consider in your situation is what happens if when service selection rolls around you don't get an aviation slot. Would you rather be on a ship/sub or flying a desk? Additionally, NROTC is a great option. Many MIDN, including myself, turned down spots at USNA or...
