What happens if you are diagnosed with HIV in NROTC?

If hypothetical, advise your friend regarding safe sex. If not hypothetical, advise that they report it as they would any other serious injury or illness - and advise them regarding safe sex. I think HIV is a disqualifying condition for commissioning. Consult NROTC leadership for a thorough and...

    Your thoughts please

If I know it is important to him, I’d be helping with reminders and guidance on communicating effectively, etc. to keep the ball rolling. I know it may be an unpopular opinion amongst some on this forum, but I don’t think “zero” involvement during the college and scholarship application process...

How is VMI in terms of academics

VMI was on my son’s shortlist, but he ultimately chose a different SMC. In the process of his consideration of his options, I spoke with a work colleague who is a Washington and Lee alumnus. In case you don’t know, W&L is the prestigious liberal arts school right across the street from VMI...

Interesting Ranking of Service Academies and SMCs

Interesting reading. Thanks for sharing. Curious ranking without clear communication of criteria or purpose (a quite diverse list). I imagine Texas A&M might be offended! And Norwich. And possibly Virginia Tech.

    VMI in the news

I couldn’t access the article you reference but a couple of quick thoughts albeit from the perspective of a dad with sons. (We have taught them to respect women. Also, my son is on AROTC scholarship at an SMC, not VMI, although it was on his short list.) Sexual assault is a potential danger on...

    Virginia Tech

Almost all pros from what I know. Passionate alumni and parents. Beautiful setting. Blacksburg is a great college town. VTCC is in the prime location on campus. Nice climate (but winter is cold). Football game days are a blast and VTCC is a centerpiece. Basketball team just won the ACC! Diverse...

    Virginia Tech

Money is really important. Also, what does your kid want? VTCC is like you dropped one of the small SMCs into the middle of a large university environment. The cadet experience is probably similar. The overall four year school environment is likely apples and oranges.

    Accidental ECP Offer?

I’m sure that is true. Honestly, I don’t recall hearing or reading from either of the two SMCs to which my son was accepted that they were a “better path” to commissioning. An SMC was, in my opinion and his, the best path for him. That’s the most important thing, to find your best fit...

    Accidental ECP Offer?

My son has the same goal and is, coincidentally, now at an SMC. Good luck! I appreciate your heart for service.

    Sticky situation

Flip side is that it could come up at some point later. Don’t know how but something to consider. Good luck with your decision. I’m sure you’ll get some great advice from folks in the know on this forum.

    Accidental ECP Offer?

I will share my sons experience and you can take it for what it’s worth. He was an AROTC scholarship applicant last year. He also selected on the application that he was not interested in the military junior college option. After the 2nd board (he was not selected for a scholarship), he received...

    Commission Rates?

The VMI rate is lower than I recall hearing in the past. I’m surprised it’s that low, but I don’t come from a position of authority on the subject. I wonder about the impact the mix of branches has (plus civilian track). I also know that data can be interpreted a lot of different ways, so your...

Quandary for my son's NROTC decision .....

I can only comment as a parent. Your advice to your son is wise. I’d advise my son to take the bird in hand. If he decided to go for the nomination that loses the NROTC scholarship, he’d have to accept putting shin in the game to make up for the lost scholarship (assuming no academy...

    Unhappy With ROTC. What's Next?

My advice that I would give my son - re-examine your “why.” Why did you choose to be there in the first place? Setting aside your struggles, does your “why” still apply. You still have a chance to be a great officer, so don’t let these early struggles deter you. Chin up. 2nd semester means...

    SMC Food

I’m surprised you not leaving the VMI bashing up to Virginia newspapers and that one SAF poster (Citadel alum?) who keeps posting their content links. VMI is clearly not for everyone. In fact, it’s for a select few. Candidly, it especially amuses me when student athletes bash VMI. Don’t they...

Does being in a fraternity effect being able to join an rotc

I applaud your desire to serve. I don’t know much about Texas A&M other than the fact that it is one of six senior military schools. My son is a first year cadet at another of the six. Being a first year cadet, along with academics, is all consuming (especially first semester). The advice to...

Virginia Tech is #2 in this ranking. https://www.niche.com/colleges/search/best-college-food/

    SMC Food

VMI is known for the spartan life. I’m sure that extends to Crozet. It was not open to visitors when my son visited the campus. VT and TAMU will likely have better food options. Don’t know about Citadel, Norwich or UNG.
