Confessions of a “control freak” parent...

An admission — I’m a control freak. I don’t think I’m a “helicopter parent.” I haven’t been to my kids’ school in many years for a conversation with teachers or administrators. But I do like to be well informed, on task, and on schedule, and I’m inclined to push others including my kids to value...

App State, NC State or UNC Charlotte AROTC

If my DS does not get a 3 year AROTC scholarship from the 3rd board, his dream school - VMI - is out due to the out of state tuition. Plan B is AROTC at Appalachian State, NC State or UNC Charlotte. His goal is an active duty commission. Please share if you have knowledge of or experience with...

    Combining collegiate athlete and AROTC

I'm looking for advice on how to help my DS think about his time and activities once he is in college. He would like to attend an SMC. If he does, it will be on a 3 or 4 year national AROTC scholarship due to cost (we'd be out of state for tuition). DS aspires to a career as an Army officer. He...

How does a 3 year AROTC scholarship work?

If my DS is awarded a 3 year AROTC scholarship, how is it paid out? I assume it applies to years 2, 3, and 4. Is that correct? And if that is that case, is he contracted immediately (year 1), or is he not contracted until year 2?

    Language skills

For a future Army officer, how desirable are skills in a second, non-English language? If that is very desirable and makes an officer candidate more competitive, what is currently (or perhaps projecting 4 to 5 years) the most in-demand language. Thanks in advance for both your opinions and...

Does AROTC scholarship process consider the preferred schools?

First post, but I've followed this site for a couple of months with great interest. Thank you! My son has applied and been accepted to VMI - and he is so excited. He wants to commission and has applied for the AROTC scholarship. It's not surprising that he didn't get selected from the first...
