    TWE and Portal

For those that received a TWE does it reflect that on your portal as well? I’ve heard of emails going out but nothing regarding TWE on the portal. Thanks in advance

    Post graduate careers

Sorry but that’s bad advice. Grades will always matter. Some years more than others. For what it’s worth when I commissioned only 5 pilots were selected from ALL maritime academies. It’s called a “drawdown” and that happens often. It’s cyclical. Grades are very important in flight school. It is...

    Post graduate careers

I flew in the Navy for 20 years and now fly commercial. Best part of maritime academy is you can apply for a pilot slot and if you don’t get it you have zero commitment. Not so with ROTC or SAs obviously

    Post graduate careers

I graduated with a Marine Engineering degree. Had multiple job offers upon graduation. I ended up taking an active duty Navy commission in aviation. It’s a great route

Graduates of Merchant Marine Academies have some of the highest employment and pay rates from all universities. Google it. Tons of ranking and articles about it. Couple years ago they ranked pay from all California colleges 10 years after they start school. Cal Maritime was number 1. Similar...

    Depression & Dropping

This last year has been a mental health challenge for many college aged adults. Unfortunately, many will shy away from getting help due to the stigma and fear of the future. I wish you the best of luck.

    NROTC Scholarship vs NAPS?

I disagree. It all depends. Where is the NROTC scholarship going to used at? That’s the critical question. A NROTC scholarship to Stanford for example would be something I’d advise my kids to seriously consider. Nothing is guaranteed. A lot can change at NAPS in a year. In the end it’s a great...

    Prior enlisted decisions

That’s what I thought. For what it’s worth, my son is enlisted in nuke power school waiting. Supposedly none of the 22 who applied from that command have heard anything yet.

How close to th action are pilots?

From Bob Norris. Navy pilot who also flew F-15 in an exchange tour. It’s funny but very true. Wrote this to another young Jedi contemplating the same thing. 12 Feb 04 Young Man, Congratulations on your selection to both the Naval and Air Force Academies. Your goal of becoming a fighter...

    Prior enlisted?

I agree. There are no cookie cutter paths. My son enlisted in nuke school. Daughter NROTC, daughter Army linguist and I went Maritime Academy. Different strokes for different folks. I just think sometimes kids are too focused on the institution vice the result.

    Prior enlisted?

Have lot of friends who said the same thing about USNA.

    Prior enlisted?

Pretty simple advice for the OP. Focus on the end state and not the path. Fact is many who apply to service academies are also competitive at some amazing schools. Daughter turned down multiple appointments in order to go an ivy. It was their choice and it was the right decision for them. Sounds...

    Prior enlisted?

All great inputs above. A couple thoughts from my perspective... If you want to be a Naval Officer then I suggest you apply to USNA and NROTC. The goal should be to be an officer instead of attending USNA. That being said, USNA is a great place to be from but not the end all be all. I don't...

No worries. You’re young. Frankly most who say they want to serve their country as an officer really have no idea what that means at your age. As far as anyone “hating” you from your comment, they forgot what it was like being young. I find your honesty refreshing. The military can be a path...

    Nuclear Navy

Retention in both the Nuke and SWO officer communities are tough. Long work hours with a lot of time at sea makes it difficult for many to go beyond their initial commitment. It’s been that way for a long time.
