After 30 years, our dentist still regrets turning down a prep school offer to USAFA. He says that every single time we see him. He thought it was beneath him to not be a direct admit and now lives with the regret and what ifs.

From the feedback here, some cadets seem to indicate that they are being shut down and worried about losing commissioning. I don't think the cadets are complaining without purpose. Parents don't have to attend. You'd have to plan the logistics for the cadet. i.e. Make sure the hotel they stay at accepts 18 year olds if they stay and sort out transportation. It is fun for parents, though.

Congratulations! It's a very special day. My advice is to book accommodations for Parents Weekend now, actually, especially if you want AirBnB. It's a busy weekend and there is usually a Balloon Festival at Memorial Park. And dinner reservations at least one month ahead.

You'll have about two hours to see your cadet on A-day. Usually parents bring lunch to the Academy. At least in the past, this is how it was done. Who knows if they'll change it.

Only you know your family. We had two kids who went to a local university (25 minutes away), and we rarely had visits or phone calls. Being close made it not urgent. I think the lighter boot (Tachyon) is more comfortable for the academy. If they were deployed the Rivot would probably be the better option since it is more rugged with better ankle support. Rivot is also a warmer boot. But test them out and order several sizes for the best fit.

Regarding the commitment, the reality of life is that after college you commit to working. If you go to USAFA, ror five years, you're job will be in the Air Force or Space Force.
