Just a Note to all the New USAFA Cadets

Like Devildog said, congratulations to all the incoming class of 2016 appointees! You are going to be starting the ride of your life! My son just finished his first year, and its everything he thought it would be and more. And like LiveGold said, I don't really want to start anything...

When ALOs/Nomination Boards ask about family support...

My son was asked variations of this question during his interview with his ALO and during congressional nomination board interviews. Afterwards, in a discussion with his ALO, the ALO mentioned that he asks all his candidates because he wants to find out if its truly the candidate's desire to...

    Candidate Phase of Application

I don't know if his ACT scores will keep his application from opening up or not, but has he considered taking the SAT also? They are different types of tests (ACT=subject knowledge, SAT=more reasoning and problem solving) and some students do much better on one or the other. The AFA will use...

    Sending SAT scores

You may be able to contact your MOC and ask them what their reporting code is. One of my son's senators included it in his application packet because he wanted scores sent from SAT/ACT directly. If you're sending scores before you've completed the MOC's application, make sure its OK so they...

    School Related Awards/Achievements

I agree--absolutely include your language exam results and the poetry contest results. I'm guessing not everyone will have that on their resumes and it will help you stand out, even if it doesn't give you a ton of points for your WCS. Maybe a foreign language poetry contest will encourage a...

When should I turn in my transcripts?

Yes, you need to have a transcript through the end of your junior year so you'll have to wait until June. For service academies (at least AFA) it will need to come from your HS counselor, along with a form that the counselor will complete and a HS profile (how many kids go to college, what are...

    requestion a nom

You may want to check the websites for all your MOC's first and look for a section about service academies/nominations. When my son did this last year, only his Congressman wanted an actual letter stating his interest in receiving a nomination. His 2 senators had online forms to fill out...

    Pre-candidate Questionnaire/SS

Unless things have changed from last year when my son attended Summer Seminar, you don't have to fill out the pre-candidate questionnaire. If you've applied to the SS (even if not selected), they have all the same info the PCQ would ask and you'll get info (by email I believe) in late...

Anyone have any info regarding a urinalysis remedial?

If the problem in your urine was protein, then that can be caused by strenuous activity before the test. Stop exercising, practicing, etc for 48 hrs. before the urinalysis (basically just take it easy--not even a long walk), drink a lot of water and retake the test. That should help.

    2nd envelope

Let's see, my son got his first BFE about March 29, mailed his acceptance in on March 31 and it arrived in COS on April 4. His second BFE came April 9, so they were quick to mail it out. Luckymacy is correct about the e-mail address to use for immunization questions--DON'T use the one they...

    *Parents* attending I-day? A-day? Parent's Weekend?

Question about Acceptance Day. It sounds like the time a parent has with their cadet is very short--a couple of hours. Is it possible to bring things that he or she may need now that BCT will be over? I guess I was thinking of things like a printer, iron, underwear (I hear that will be an...

    ACT scores

rayquad, are you all finished taking the ACT and/or SAT? I don't know your scores, but since you are a junior applying for class of 2016, you could still take them again to improve if need be--academics (including test scores) make up 60% of your WCS I believe. Just make the AFA one of the 4...

    Candidate Fitness and Medical Exams

You can do the CFA any time after you get your application packet online. If you didn't apply for summer seminar, then go ahead and do the pre-candidate questionnaire online now. By some point in July you should then get your online application info with all the requirements/checklists. Do not...

    CFA Basketball throw help

rayquad, if you google CFA basketball throw, you will find all sorts of info on technique. You can really add on the distance by using the correct technique--keeping knees at a 45 degree angle, twisting your torso to generate more throwing power. Its not just a simple throw using your arm. My...

    Application Issues

You're right, the issue whether Japanese is tech/non-tech is confusing, since it appears to be listed both ways. I would call Maxwell AFB (AFROTC Admissions) and ask. Here is the info: 866-423-7682 (Mon-Fri, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central Time). Going directly to the source will give you the...

SAT Scores... What's the reality here?

Each MOC is different--some will want the complete package submitted all at once, others may let you update. I would check each of their websites for their nomination specifics, although it may still be a little early and not all will have info for next year out yet. For my son, I believe 2...

    Application Issues

agent--I was surprised when you said Japanese didn't come up for any university, so I went on the website and tried. When I put in Foreign Lang--Japanese and selected all states, nothing came up. But when I chose an individual state (I tried Maryland and Virginia) I got a list of schools for...

    ACT High Scores

alparent--You don't have to have the ACT scores sent from 7th or 8th grade. I'm assuming that your son also has taken it in high school and scored higher. For the AFA it doesn't hurt to have the ACT or SAT scores sent every time you take it in HS. They will automatically take the higher...

    Application Issues

Agent-- I can reply only concerning AFROTC since that's all my son applied for. AFROTC will ask you to list 3 schools that you are considering, but you won't be tied to a school if you receive a scholarship. You will also be asked the major you will be pursuing (most scholarships are given...
