Probably more to do with the school choice TBH. The PT is a minor part of the ROTC application, and the interview only accounts for 200 points. Nearly all the applicants I have seen on this forum would be 150+ on the interview.

Really pleased for your son but it makes me wonder what CC are looking at. A weighted GPA of 3.2 is pretty low in most high schools, and I am presuming his unweighted was well below 3.0. I am sure he is a fine young man with good leadership qualities but with those academic stats he would...

Do you have to do basic and AIT to get GI Bill and kicker?

Affirmative discrimination is definitely part of the process. Anyone that doesn't see it is blind or stupid. Not saying it is wrong or shouldn't' happen but its a fact of life with many government jobs.

Joining the National Guard before ROTC?

Not 100% true. All qualified loans are eligable: ALAS, Parent plus etc.

Joining the National Guard before ROTC?

That is a good deal. Another option is get student loans prior to contracting SMP sophomore year. Say $10k freshman year and $10k summer before signing NG papers. You would be eligible for CLRP for the full $20k.

Joining the National Guard before ROTC?

My understanding was you only get tuition assistance once a contracted SMP cadet, which would be sophomore year. A better option might be get loans freshman and sophomore year. The NG pays upto $20k of student loans off that are signed for prior to contracting SMP.

A word of encouragement for those that don't get a national scholarship this month, do not give up. Prepare for college as if you will be a contracted cadet and arrive on campus fit and ready to go. Join ROTC classes, pass the PT test and get involved in extra activities. Most schools have...

Joining the National Guard before ROTC?

You will have a very good chance of finding yourself in pretty undesirable locations if you have NG obligations. You join the guard freshman year and decide ROTC is not for you then you would be a deploy-able member of the NG. You might not make it through four years of school without a long...

Joining the National Guard before ROTC?

Well technically you are enlisted and deploy-able once you reach 18. You would only get drill pay your college freshman year unless you did basic training and AIT then you could get GI Bill and kicker. They would pay tuition for sophomore thru senior year though, plus the ROTC stipend. I...

    SMP In-State tuition

NO......but some States offer top up money for SMP cadets.

    SMP National Guard

Well technically the same can be said for ROTC scholarship cadets. If you fail to commision they can enlist you.

    Air Force Weight Standards

They tape you. Basically if you are fit you'll be OK. My DS's maximum weight on the army charts based on height is 206lbs. He is currently 220lbs and well under the body fat line on the tape test. He can actually add 40lbs and still be OK unless his waist size went up 4-5 inches.

    SMP National Guard

That is the site I read it on. I presume you can join the guard in the State you go to school. If the extra OML points applies the advantage is huge IMO. Being SMP will practically guarantee AD for any cadet requesting it, which can't be said for ROTC scholarship recipients.

    SMP National Guard

Clarkson - is the bullet about an extra 15+ points on the OML for SMP Cadets correct? If that is the case SMP cadets have a distinct advantage over ROTC scholarship cadets when it comes to AD places and branching. A ROTC cadet could do four years college and be placed on reserve whereas its...

It really depends. If the housing market picks up a little the number of applicants will fall. If the US was dragged into another conflict the numbers could also drop. Of course budget pressure might/will rear their ugly head as well.

It would be cool if we had a thread with scholarship winners with a few basic stats. It would help future cadets see what their chances might be. Maybe something like: College GPA SAT Leadership (JROTC/Eagle Scout etc) Volunteer Clubs Athletics Just the basic facts and no...
