I'm currently stationed in texas. Today, february 21st, its 82 degrees. I prefer to keep mine long because it keeps it off my neck and out of my eyes. You also don't have to worry about styling it at all.

Our military ID photos were taken during basic training at ft. Jackson during inprocessing...I would assume its the same way at west point. And yes they did look like mugshots!!

If you go for a visit to west point you can probably also get them at the PX. I know the PX/Clothing and Sales at Hood sells them without logos.
