‘25 PS so far

I also realize the Class of '24 PS did not have this luxury but I wonder if maybe that was better???
Nope. We had to photoshop faces to remove masks bothways in the snow to determine if our plebes were in that particular photo or 98,000 within those few weeks.

I didn’t see meat on their menu.

Can’t I be healthier by eating more plants too? I just ate a 16 Oz filet mignon. I can’t give that up.
Just watch the movie. Its fascinating regardless of whether or not you want to eat meat.

Follow @admiral_ernieking (official page of MFSD) on IG if you really want to see what they eat. They eat VERY well during plebe summer. Last year? Everything was mostly cold, in a styrofoam box. Staff had to absorb all the “extras” that COVID required, cost wise, in their budget. And they got through it.

The Director of all this, the person in charge, has more money to work with going forward (heard him speak at a conference last fall). Increased money per Mid than ever before. He was a two sport athlete during his time at USNA (track and football), and is very aware of the nutritional needs of EVERYONE. Honestly, compared to colleges across the country, that I’ve been involved with, it’s quite impressive. They feed 4K plus Midshipmen, family style, 3 times a day. All at the same time (other than last year). Amazing.

There are fresh fruits and veggies galore. Salad bar. Protein stations during the day (pick up ‘free’ bars, shakes, etc). I think this next year they will see some positive dining changes (discussed in a recent training).

Beyond that? Mids can order their own deliveries a via doordash, or from local grocery store, beyond plebe summer. Or sponsor parents can deliver.

Food is not an issue. She won’t suffer from a lack of fruits and veggies during her SIQ. Which means someone is picking up a to-go meal for them. It OK. Don’t worry. You can spoil them during parents week. Especially if food is your love language ♥️

BTW…speaking of plant based foods, a chickpea Buffalo burger was recently featured on the King Hall Instagram. As a permanent addition to the menu.
We just received a letter telling us she was able to make an appointment with the nutritionist, and there is such thing as a vegetarian chit. Seems you get whole grains and beans/legumes if you chose that route. Not sure how it all works, but I am happy she's got some options. Great to hear about chickpea buffalo burger!! Sounds delicious!

So when does the "Where's my Plebe in this photo" wain? Since the Yard has been open for all visitors during PS '25, FB and IG are full of parents posting video's/photos and my DW spends time everyday scouring these for daily "proof of life". Add to FB/IG, the Alumni photo site (which I am not sure was a good investment of $) and the USNA Flickr site, considerable time is spent looking for DS and then worrying when DS is not to be found. If by chance DS is caught in a video or photo, most of the time it is from a distance and not directly. Don't get me wrong on the few occasions we have gotten a really a good picture or video I am excited as well. However I am coming to terms with the unknown and the delay between snail mail notes. I also realize the Class of '24 PS did not have this luxury but I wonder if maybe that was better??? As discussed many times, they are in controlled environment intended to make them succeed. Also those that go off to boot camps or basic camps don't have the paparazzi's around and survive.

Next phone call home is 4 days away and PPW is 2 weeks from now! Don't give up the ship!
You must not subscribe to Thornton’s photo program. I have 100’s of really good pics of my oldest. They capture the memory. The feelings for them. They are now popping up in my memories, and I smile. And send them to my firstie. And we reminisce. As does he and his youngster brother.

For me, it’s not about surviving with or without pics of my guys. It’s about preserving memories. As I went through my parents home, the most time and emotion, and favorite part of the whole ordeal, was going through their photo albums. And getting a glimpse at their lives as kids.

In this ever more digital age, those pictures disappear. Like a 24 hr Snapchat. It’s not about me wanting to see them. It’s about me realizing someday they will want to share their lives with their own grandkids. And their grandkids will want to see them ‘back in the day’. ‘Wow, grandma, you did THAT?? You are bada$$!’ Without pictures, those memories are gone. Except for stories.

Even only 3 years later, for my firstie, they are fantastic memories. And especially for my masked plebe last year….”wow grandpa, you did that during a pandemic?”

That’s what photos do for me. I want them all. One never gets a do-over, 2nd chance to get the picture. I’ll pay everyday for them ❤️

Who wouldn't enjoy a good photo of their kid. But, the parents who are "stalking" the Plebes at PS - seems a little strange.

No we do not have Thornton's as we chose the Alumni Association route instead. The Thorton's photo program just seemed like an added expense.

For what my 2 cents are worth…I did subscribe to Thornton for the access/downloads and coffee table book. So far I have over 150 photos of my Plebe. I did tell a photographer friend of mine all that it entailed and she said it was a bargain!

A few photos that popped up today made me laugh and cry at the same time…laughing because he was posing, knowing I would see it! Crying tears of joy because he is truly in his element…made me so proud seeing him living his dream after working so hard to get there ❤️

I miss those. I ask my son to take selfies with his friends every now and then and send them to me. He almost never remembers.
Once in a while though, I get one or two of him and his roommates being absolute goofballs.
It is very much appreciated, since I'm still getting used to not having him around.

I found a hack: get to know the roommates, and ask THEM for pics of your Mid 😂

Kinda sorta kidding. Some feel weird taking selfie’s. Feel pompous. Not humble. I get it. So the roommate doing it feels better. For some. Then tell your own to take one of their roommate to send to THEIR mom.

Seriously, I adore my kids roommates. Feelings seems mutual. It’s all working out great. Bribing with my famous scotcharoos (extra goo, less chocolate), and Federal House crab soup helps, too. And moms get pics. Win-win 👍

I am lucky to have one who so far, indulges his mom. I got pictures yesterday from North of the Hotel Del on a beach with newfound PROTRAMID friends. Looked like they were finally relaxed and having fun. Well deserved. I hope he keeps it up.

I saw somewhere that a mom suggested printing into a photo book a collection of pictures from plebe summer forward as a gift. I think I may undertake this process. And order 2, one for him, and one for his mama.

Well, I did get some photos from Quantico when he was there for Leatherneck. Those were cool.
The most comical part was the M16-A2s (saw a couple of A1s, too) they were issued. I'll bet they were some of the same rifles that @USMCGrunt and I used when we were at Quantico. ;)

I wondered the same about the airplanes I saw my guy in. They looked like they have been around for awhile 😬

so interesting bc I did the Thornton picture access too and I only have around 13 pictures - our company went 10 days without one picture posted by him. I asked for my money back for the book bc I will be able to make my own with other pictures from Alumni association and Flickr - it is strange how some people have so many pics and others have very few.....oh well......its fun looking through all the social media to find Waldo!!!
