Hi!

I was accepted into NAPS and am waiting for my diploma to continue with my required actions.

My admissions officer told me the documents on the informational page for NAPS are not updated yet because of COVID-19, did anyone else notice this?

Anyway, may someone bring clarification for the instruction: Enlist into the Naval Reserve?

What should I expect when I bring the required papers? How will the process unfold?

Thanks for your time!

Sometime in the next few weeks your portal will update with documents you need to fill out and take to a Navy recruiter to enlist. NAPS is small and the process is different from a traditional enlistment, so many recruiters won't really know what to do with it at first. One of the documents will have guidance for the recruiter on how to proceed with your enlistment, so make sure they see that. I got passed around to a few different recruiters in my region before one was finally willing to do the work necessary to get me through. You don't need to take the ASVAB, and you don't need to go through any medical screenings at MEPS since you have already gone through DoDMERB. I would call ahead to your local recruiter to touch base, especially with all of the COVID-19 stuff going on.

You will need to find the recruitment office closest to you / and or the one that will do it. Hopefully someone is familiar with the NAPS process. I would imagine the forms don’t change much from year to year. There are instructions on packet about forms and where to send. You will also have to be sworn in. You print the forms and go to recruitment office and they process. As soon as you get your diploma you should try to do this. It won’t hurt to call and talk to someone and see if they are familiar with process. Good Luck. DD had a bit of ordeal but it was completed but she had to keep following up.

Thank YOU! What was the USN rank after signing up? I heard that USNaval Sea Cadet Corps allows incoming recruit a rank of E3. Is this correct?

Thank YOU! Our daughter also just was notified for NAPS. What rank would she obtain in USN? She had spent 5 years as USNaval Sea Cadet Corps and I understand she would qualifiy for an E3? Thanks for any information.

I think that she would qualify for E-3 if she enlisted. When my son was at Marine OCS he was an E-5 for pay and accountability purposes but was by no means a Marine sergeant. Although, his mail from USAA was addressed to Sergeant Last Name. Like another poster told you on another thread, Sea Cadets will mean nothing at NAPS. Unless I'm wrong of course.

Sea Cadets time has no impact on NAPS assigned Navy Reserve paygrade.

The military status allows them to be fed, housed, schooled and get healthcare on the Navy dime.

Prior enlisted at NAPS, if at a higher paygrade, retain that while at NAPS.

The link below will likely soon be updated to 2020-2021, but most info will not change:

Directs at NAPS are technically E-1s, but you're considered a Midshipman Candidate (M/C) instead of a Seaman Recruit for pay purposes. Not 100% sure how all of the admin stuff works, but she won't be an E-3. That promotion from Sea Cadets only applies to a regular enlistment through boot camp.

There are two things in the military, pay grade and rank. For most, these two match. NAPS is one of those that is weird. Pay grade will be E-1 and rank is Midn Candidate. Prior enlisted will have a pay grade of whatever they entered NAPS at and their rank becomes Midn Candidate. You really don’t see this in the fleet except places like USHSS. I had a buddy who was an Army Captain, then went there for Med School. They become all O-1s while there. So he then became an 0-1 but got paid at his 0-3 pay. Upon graduation he was promoted back to O-3.

Thank YOU all! I also checked midshipman pay chart and learned more about it. Thanks!

> Good to hear that nothing has changed in 40 years. I enlisted for NAPS , and my local recruiting station really struggled to figure out what do do with me. Communications are better now, so I suspect there is a Recruiter HELP line that will get them through the process. (I did have to take the ASVAB -- I did pretty well and the Recruiter tried to talk me into going to Nuclear Power Schools instead of NAPS; but instead of sending me to MEPS for processing, they found a stashed Ensign to swear me in).

You are considered a Midshipman Candidate while at NAPS and for NAPS purposes only. NAPSters (including Direct, and prior Navy and USMC) wear (or at least did back in the day) enlisted Navy uniforms , with a distinctive NAPS patch which did not show their actual Navy /Marine rank. Stripers (MC Officers) wore braided aiguillettes to show their position. (The exception was utility uniforms ..back then Navy would wear dungarees and Marines cammies, with their normal rank insignia). For all other purpose, including pay, the M/C's used their actual Navy rank -- i.e. paid at E-1 (and promoted to E-2 at the 6 month mark). I recall the almost $500 paycheck every couple weeks was pretty high living for an 18 year old , fresh out of HS, with no expenses.

.
Last year at this time, we called a few local recruiting offices here in the NoVA area and found a recruiter, at the Waples Mill Road Fairfax office (who was also the official in charge at that location), who had been through the process before with several locals. He called in a Local class of 2023 appointee, who had just graduated NAPS in the class of 2019, to greet us when we arrived, answer any questions we had, and help where possible with the paperwork and orders.

The official we worked with at that office wasn’t authorized to swear our daughter in on that first visit. We went back a week later where an officer met her, witnessed document signatures, and did the official swearing in. The NAPS appointee takes all the documents with them, and mails parts to the USNA, and all parts to NAPS.

My wife and me took pictures and cried tears of joy.

Can a retiree US Military Commissioned Officer conduct the official swearing in?

Phone ahead and ask. I'm retired Navy, and I was able to administer the enlistment oath to my son when he joined the Air Force.

Yes they can. I had a retired CWO3 swear me in. Just call ahead to the Navy enlistee manager (not sure actual title) and let them know.

Has any NAPSTER21 enlisted in the USN yet? What is/was your experience? Thanks. Still waiting for the portal update with the forms for enlistment.

The forms for enlistment have been updated and are found on the NAPS Info page, not in the portal directly. I am from the NYC area; my local recruiters office has been advised to send me to another office in June where I can then enlist with someone familiar with the NAPS process.

Please call your local recruiters office/station ASAP in order to learn more about your area specific way of handling the NAPS process.
