16 Cadets Test Positive

Of the 850 that came back, 14 had the antibodies (I assume that means they had the virus before returning and didn’t know it) and two had the disease. All 16 had no symptoms. And there was no spread?

Am I reading this right?

Yes.
Unlike USNA, West Point is doing 100% testing of all returning new lieutenants and Cadets.
Also, the article title is misleading. The Cadets/lieutenants were coming back, speech or no speech. The Army goes rolling along. Soldiers are going through basic training, the Army needs lieutenants. Barracks rooms need to be cleaned out so the other classes can return and prepare for the class of 2024.

UHBlackhawk is 100% correct - the USMA Class of 2020 had to come back, speech or no speech. There was no way around it.

Academy leadership planned meticulously and took into consideration that a percentage of returning members of the Class of 2020 would be COVID-19 positive. They came up with a plan and have moved the ball toward the goal line.

Each SA has provided responsible leadership around how to deal with this virus in their own unique ways. They should be commended.

I want to clarify that my point about USNA not testing was not meant to be a slam on them. As USMAGRAD1988 said each SA took care of this in their own way. I was merely trying to point out that no one said a thing when the Midshipmen were brought back.

I have no issue with the way USNA or USMA handled bringing back 1/C for commissioning. I am glad they got to come back in some way to celebrate one last time as a class. USNA did what worked best for the living space they had and kept precautions in place. USMA is doing what works best for their campus/base and timeline. Hope the Cadets recover and enjoy the last few weeks together.

here we go.

This was a very biased article...guess some just love to play politics. If the sup didn’t want a graduation he would have said no. Being a Westpoint grad himself I’m sure he values the tradition and was always planning on bringing them back to out process and graduate! Some just can’t get past their hate for our president.
I’m not sure this reporter got the stats right either...the Covid and antibodies are 2 different tests, from what I understand you cannot test positive for Covid and also positive for the antibodies. Only some of the cadets got the antibodies test, they did it in conjunction with the mandatory HIV tests on the cadets who had not done the HIV test prior to leaving for spring break.

USNA has instructed incoming plebes that they will be tested on their report day, quarantined for 2 weeks and then tested again. That is latest in permit to report update. I wish the USMA class of 2020 the best in their future careers.

As a 2020 USMA parent I am so pleased with how General Williams and his staff have handled this unprecedented set of circumstances. My son is so happy to be with his buddies for the next two weeks before graduation. They didn’t scramble so they have been through thick and thin for 4+ years. West Point also had the luxury of the having the expansive training area for this return and testing. As parents we are extremely disappointed that we can’t attend in person but will be glued to the live feed... don’t miss this ... I think this ceremony will be one for the ages!!

Very misleading. This is a virus that attacks the elderly and those with underlying conditions. Look at the facts. Of the 39K plus of people who passed in Italy less than 1% were under 50. That's 350. In my state 97% of deaths are over 60 (and this is not taking into account underlying conditions). No one under 18 and 1 person under 30 has passed from this, in my state. The numbers for your state are similar. I have looked. I urge all to research their state. One life is too many, and I feel for those families affected, but these cadets are not at real risk. Let's keep them as safe as possible and take precautions, but it's time. IMHO, it will be much more important for these new officers to remain removed from at risk population, and be conscientious of who they are around after commissioning.

Does also make you wonder if there had been the antibody test before they left for break would some of them had already tested positive then? This virus has been around since last fall. There is a high probability that some had already had it before they left for Spring Break. I think the article is very misleading, making it sound like those who tested positive, as if they currently have it now. The antibody test just says you have had it, not that you can spread it now. They’ve already debunked the myth they originally thought that you could spread it for two weeks before you knew you had it.

The other issue is the accuracy of the tests. The gold standard of a test is 95% sensitivity (detects positive when positive) and 95% specificity (detects negative when negative). Even if the tests were this accurate, there is still a strong chance of false positives due to the current low amount of virus that is currently in the environment. This is the reason why Norway stopped testing.

My mothers friend in January got sick with the Covid 19 symptoms (although at the time it was just called a bad flu) When speaking to her doctors recently, they now believe she she had gone through the Corona Virus. I honestly dont know if she got tested for the antibodies, but my point is that it hit the US earlier than originally thought.
