i haven't been able to clarify these 2 yet, so:

is there an aerospace/aeronautical/etc. major offered at USMA?

what happens to AP credit if you attend? are you placed in higher levels classes to start off or don't have to take classes or what? (same with CLEP)

If you want to major in Aeronautical Engineering then West Point is not your school. Check USNA or USAFA.

check out the AP link that Antoinette posted. Passing an AP test doesn't guarantee that you will validate a class. For the most part you are also required to do well on the validation test.
You don't actually get "credit" - you would get excused from the core class and be able to schedule something else. There is no transferring of credit or graduating early.

If you are wanting to become an astronaut, please note that a lack of aeronautical engineering degree did not stop Frank Borman, Buzz Aldren, Ed White, or the other six USMA grads who went on to great careers in space. A recent one, Sherwood Spring, had a son who was on the men's gymnastics team at the 2008 Olympics.

Nor did it hurt my buddy Jeff Williams (USMA '80) who spent most of 2006 circling the earth on the international Space Station (193 days in space on this and one other mission) and who got a Masters in Aeronautical Engineering from the Naval PGS.

sorry I didn't clarify...I mean, being an astronaut would be an amazing job, but for the degree, i was thinking about having it to have a possible career choice when i retire from the army (still being at least only 42 years old and at most 52) in the defense aerospace engineering field.

by the way, thanks for the link, Antoinette. so I basically have to get a perfect score on the AP tests to validate a class......oh, well, guess i gotta start studying now.

by the way, if you don't get the score you want on an AP test, can you retake it like the SAT and ACT?

AP classes

You can't retake any AP tests. You get to take them once...that's it. :frown: However, if you do poorly on an AP test and don't want any schools you apply to to see it, you can get it expunged from your AP record.

thanks for the answer...i was hoping for a yes mainly cause so i could retake it again to get a perfect score so I could validate some courses, but since not...oh well

Actually my S's school AP coordinator said in a info session that you can retake any AP tests if you want but, you have to wait a whole year to do it in May. I don't know if she was misinformed but...

AP tests are given once a year, in May. You can take or retake them at that time by just paying the money.

doing poorly (getting a 1 or a 2) on an AP test will NOT hurt you in the application process. My advice though is don't send any scores until your senior year - espeically if your high school put them on your transcript. When you take AP's in May of your senior year - send the scores to the college you will attend. They will get all the scores from all the tests you have ever taken.

Once you had taken them once, why would you want to suffer through them again? :shake:

so I would maybe do better and might even be good enough to validate a course...kinda like the SAT and ACTs

that's good news to my ears

also, another question: should I take the SAT Subject Tests? will it help me in any way as far as admission to WP if I do?
TIA

I looked up AP tests on the college board website (they give the AP tests) and found this:

"How many times can I repeat an AP Exam?
You can take an AP Exam each time it is offered (AP Exams are offered once a year in May). Your grade report will include your grades for all the AP Exams you have taken, including yearly "repeats" of the same subject exam."

I appologize for my incorrect answer earlier. When I was preparing for my AP World History test my teacher told us that you could not retake AP tests (and he had been teaching AP classes for years). Maybe he was misinformed or they changed the rules?
