Invictus means "Unconquerable," from the poem "Invictus" by William Henley.

Invictus
by William Ernest Henley; 1849-1903

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

What is running behind the globe with the two handles sticking out on either side. I would not think anyone today would know what a belaying spike is and a dough roller just doesn't make any sense.

Nice crest though.

It's a ship's helm. If you look around the globe, you'll see more handles.

The eagle's talons are where two more handles should be...I guess that kinda throws the look off a bit...

Oh, nevermind. I saw the others. Thought for a while that they were pacifiers. What is the significance of the rope signifying "60" at the bottom?

Wow...I must have glanced over that without even noticing it was a '60'...but they're our "50 year link in the chain"

Yep, and I am sure they have started a tradition. In nine years, I will be damned if I am out there crawling through the mud and paddling a rubber boat. But I know that a half dozen of my "closest" friends have already included me in the group.

Uh......... What?

The Class of 1960 had a team which competed in Sea Trials. Don't know the particulars but the Class of 1960, being a 50 year spread, have kind of attached themselves to 2010. Maybe they consider them a captive audience for sea stories.

Wait...you guys never had any contact with the class 50 years before you?

The Alumni Association has this "Another Link in the Chain" program where the class 50 years prior is supposed to 'sponsor and mentor' the class through it's time at USNA. They attend parades, ceremonies (I-Day, end of plebe summer, recognition, service selection, commissioning, etc). It's been going since alteast C/O 2000...I don't know if they had it for your era, Z.

'60 was the first to have a group of, I believe, 9 alumni go through Sea Trials with my class. As such, they've probably started yet another tradition with the 'link in the chain' program.

USNA69....I already told MY hubby that I hope in 2018 - which is the beginning of the arriving class of 2022 that he most certainly IS able to hang out with Plebes and having fun!

Dmeix, my kiddo shared this crest with us last week and I have it proudly posted up on a large sheet in my room! I think all the symbolism contained in it is awesome! She wondered how many other classes use the Marine symbols with the Eagle, Globe, Anchor....does anyone else know? For her heart's desire to one day be commissioned as a 2ndLT she certainly likes it!:thumb:

And as for the 50 year link and all the activities- it's a relatively NEW development - someone told me it's happened within the past 10 years...anyone have the exact date?

Thanks for sharing the crest - I think it is pretty cool. Who designs it? Is there a committee of midshipmen from the class?

Yes. Each company's plebe class picks one person to be the company rep. Those 30 plebes form the class ring committe. They subit ideas and designs, and a professional artist renders the crest. They narrowed it down to 3 designs that were sent to each company for everyone to vote on.

There was no official presentation of the crest or anything. The first time I saw it was on the back of my buddy's NASS detail shirt.

I don't know what happened in my class, but all of a sudden we had a crest one day, and not a very creative one.

Hell, one version was even mispelled. Instead of "Semper Defende Libertas" ("Always Defend Freedom"), it said "Semper Defende Liber" ("Always Defend Books").

Oh, well....

Yes, 1941 would have been a great class to partner with, or whatever it's called. It just wasn't a priority for any class back then. Doesn't mean it can't be now, but it's good to see that they are doing it at all.

So....... Class of 2041, eh? Hope I last that long. :thumb:
