Here it is:

http://www.usmma.edu/admissions/PDFs/Loggin2011.pdf

now a question.

We have been reviewing the 2010 logging in book over the last couple of weeks and making sure S has all of his shots. The 2010 book calls for:

7. Hepatitis B (at least the first dose of 3)

The 2011 book calls for:

7. Hepatitis B Series (3 doses)

8. Hepatitis A (2 doses)

He has received all three doses for Hepatitis B and he just received his first dose of Hepatitis A in April 2007 even though it was not listed on the requirements in the 2010 book. My understanding is that he has to wait 6 months before taking the second dose of the A series which would be in October. The book states “Primary and booster immunizations are mandatory”

Having not know that the A Series was a mandatory requirement and was not required by his high school we did not have the requirement addressed sooner. Did we miss something during the application process where this was posted earlier? Is this a problem?

Hepatitis A should have been required by the state for school attendance. Hepatitis B is a relatively newer requirement. Younger children are given these immunizations routinely; however, older children need these shots because they did not receive them as young children.

The recommended time between doses varies depending upon the health professional.

Not required by the Texas Dept or State Health Services - only Hep B is required. I am sure it varies by state.

You should be receiving an immunization form to send back in to Patten Hall. On the form, you'll list everything he's had to date. Its my understanding that they take care of it from there. I would not be concerned but if you'd like peace of mind, just call Patton. They are awesome with these questions.

Thanks. I talked to Health Services this morning. They stated this was new and in fact a large number of incoming plebes do not have the Hep A. Stated that having the first dose will be OK and they will administer the second dose when appropriate. I directed them to page 20 of the book and suggested they look at the "mandatory language" - they agreed and stated if they started receiving calls they may change it.

Good to know. Thanks for passing that along. I also wish they would re-word another part of the instruction. Re:

A bit of advice on mailing letters during Indoc:

On page 6 of the reporting instructions, it tells you how to address letters. Ignore that part. Here's what we found out the hard way so I'm passing it along....
Do not address your letters as "Plebe Candidate John Smith" until AFTER Indoc. Address them as just "Candidate John Smith" DURING Indoc. They will not become Plebe Candidates until after they complete Indoc. Ya'll trust me on this.

Sage advice supermod... Same applies at CGA...address your cadet to be as "Swab..." until shoulderboards.

Hep A is NOT a requirement in Virginia. Looking at a copy of my son's shot record from the school and he had 3 Hep B and no Hep A. Hope this does not hurt his reporting in July!

I think Great American got it backwards - Hep B has been around long enough that our kids should have had them. It is spread through body fluids.

Hep A is only required in a few states. I think it is fairly new - only people who meet certain criteria have been recommended for vaccination. Hep A is spread mainly through contaminated food and poor sanitary conditions.

Here is the scoop. I emailed Patten Health Services and they emailed if he "has his first Hepatitis A immunization we will give him his second at the appropriate time" ... I also made a second inquiry about the Tdap versus the DT that was required for 2010 Loggin In Book (See item #1 on the immunization list). My S has had the DT and I asked if these were the same... response was "This is not the same vaccine. It would be best if [your S] had Tdap. This way he would have the coverage for pertussis as well." So, he now gets another shot - he'll be thrilled.

KP kids fit that criteria as they travel to some rather seedy places in the world. The kids are at high risk for the tb antibody as well.

ouch

I've not even mentioned to my son that he has to have a battery of shots! Hope he missed that part in the logging in book :yllol:
