Supposedly, if a plebe class places a cover on top of the chapel dome, they rate carry on for the remainder of the year. Class of 2012 attempt:

Does this, for anyone other than myself, seem like a very lame attempt? I would think that back in the days of a 'real' plebe year, this would have earned the perpetrators, perhaps the entire class, permanent 'shoving out'.

I actually thought it was a very clever use of technology and the engineering skills they have learned which they have applied in an efficient and safe manner. That may be a mommy talking who would rather not have her mid climbing the chapel dome, potentially damaging it and possibly themselves in the process of a lame tradition. I am sure it was merely something somebody came up with in the 70s in order to see if Plebes would be dumb enough to actually climb up there without thinking about needlessly risking life and limb. We must remember these guys are college kids after all...just think of the ridiculous things fraternity "pledges" are told to do. I commend the class of 2012 for doing it in a safe and creative manner and I hope they get their "carry on."
Don't get me wrong, I fully agree with the "back in the days of the last real plebe year" comment, but this is clearly not one of the situations. I would rather see plebes "bracing up" and "chopping" more often :)

And Oldgrad! Thanks for posting the video, I forwarded to my hubby and he was impressed :)

Would have been better and much more meaningful had they not had faculty help. Common knowledge on the yard.

Ah! Faculty help! Not so good. Did they get a good grade in the class?? :)

Cover Help

Help was given by a physics professor in order to calculate the tension on the lines. The USNA Chemistry department donated the Helium. The entire project was constructed in my room- hanging it from the ceiling. I have not heard anyone annoyed that I got faculty help. Actually, most people are thrilled that I took every possible precaution as to not damage the chapel dome.

That's genius, I'm at NAPS and we're already trying to brainstorm some ideas to do this. Do you know if you guys got your privileges yet?

One week of carry-on for 2012, thanks to MIDN Calabrese and 3rd company.

It would have been pretty good to do it at night and to just let people try and figure out how they did it :) Tough to keep a secret like that though, but it would have been interesting to hear the ideas people came up with as to how they did it.

Good work on the use of technology...but next time I expect to see some broken bones at least

I thought it was great. Remember these are plebes, most likely have not had any engineering classes yet at USNA. My plebe is enjoying his Carry on...thanks.

The Pentagon

In 1977, a cover was placed on the chapel dome. Supposedly, those plebes got “carry-on” the rest of the year. Word has spread to the Pentagon that we only got it for a week, and a couple of Admirals from the class of 1973 are not happy!

Excuse my ignorance, but what privileges does 'carry on' entail?

Why should the class get a carry on for the rest of the year when they clearly did not do this "on their own" but did so with assistance from the faculty? I am sure there are no rules as to faculty assistance but when it is supposed to be an accomplishment of the Class of 2012 in order to earn privileges for the Class, should they have not tried to solve the problem on their own?

Carry On

"Carry On" is the upper-class way of saying, "relaxed restrictions."
These restrictions include:
No TV, movies, music, sleeping until 11PM
Chopping, plebing covers, chow calls, menus, daily rates, sitting at front 3 inches of chair in King Hall..........

The main reason I had faculty help was for their support. In ALL previous attempts, this was done at night with immense damage to chapel dome. By gaining faculty and admin support I was able to ensure that the class DID receive carry-on; that I would NOT be separated, and that ADMIN knew I took every safety precaution.
This is how the faculty helped me. The Chemistry department gave me the helium (I can’t have a tank shipped to my P.O. box), my chemistry teacher was the “adult” supervision (to make sure we didn’t do anything stupid…like climb the dome), and a systems instructor told me I shouldn’t do it because of A, B, and C… Mainly safety issues- which I later resolved.

Thanks, great input. Funny how having the facts from someone directly involved easily clarifies all of the misinformation!!!!

BRAVO ZULU 3rd Herd....... 4/C's are currently enjoying the rewards from your planning and successful mission !:thumb:

Way to use your head!!!! Brilliant work!! Enjoy the "carry on"....

Good for you, ccalabrese!

Few problems are solved in a vacuum -- the best leaders know how/when/where to add resources and engage the CoC.
