My son was accepted as principal to USMMA and USCGA. I think he is leaning USMMA. However, I notice that he spends quite a bit of time on Facebook talking to other kids across the nation on a group the CGA advertised right in his Acceptance Letter. There are over 100 kids in the group. He searched and found two groups for the class of 2013 for USMMA and joined them, but there are only about 6 members in each group. It would be a great idea if other soon to be mids of USMMA's next class would join either of these Facebook Groups "USMMA 13" or "USMMA Class of 2013" so incoming mids could get to know one another and converse. The CGA site seems to be a hit, and I think we all know kids these days seem to use Facebook as a primary method of communication. I'd like to see a healthy group set up at USMMA for these kids to start getting excited about Indoc Day. Plus they could get to know one another in advance.

and from things I have read...

after admitted into the CGA kids must delete their facebooks and myspaces

after admitted to the MMA kids and parents are recommended to set up IM account and such..

not sure how that figures but I have also seen just what you have said...

We have to delete our FB accounts? Really, thats pretty lame.

on the CC forums there was a conversation going on with a 4/c and then he was tolld he was not suppose to be on social networking sites... .. then there was a discussion about if CC was a social network site.. blah blah blah...then he was gone.... it got a bit deeper (I summarized)...

I am not for sure, as no one told me the rules, that is why I said it is what I read.. so maybe its just the 4/c ?? not to use social networking site ?!?!

I am sure someone might chime in and verify?!?!

I don't know if you have to delete Myspace and Facebook later, but I was thinking all those accepted to MMA could join a site and start getting to know one another before you report. Might help a bit during INDOC to know one another before you arrive so to speak. My son is getting quite a bit of interaction with CGA in that Facebook group but very little interaction with MMA in their group because there is only 8 members vs 100+ for CGA. Those appointed to MMA should join the group "USMMA 13" and/or "USMMA Class of 2013" Start talking to one another.

My son (class of 2013) has been using the facebook site to communicate with other USMMA candidates since he received his appointment offer in October. He said the number communicating grows each week....I guess as appoinment offers are conveyed. He is on the site nightly.

Promote This Site

This one ???

United States Merchant Marine Academy Class of 2013 (26 members)

Thanks. I guess there are 3 known Facebook Groups for USMMA Class of 2013. I really like the interaction my son has with USCGA 2013. They created their own group and promoted it right in the acceptance letter. Over 100 members vs just 26 for USMMA. So maybe we promote the above site, so more join and interact. Enthusiasm for meeting each other at INDOC is pretty cool.

USCGA is able to offer appointments much earlier than USMMA, as no waiting for Congressional nominations is needed.

USCGA has already awarded 235 appointments, while my guess is Kings Point hasn't awarded anywhere near that many.

Yet.

I'm sure the traffic will pick up soon! :thumb:

Facebook/Myspace

As I recall from plebe year, the Plebes are not allowed to be "friends" with upper class men until after recognition. S said it's always interesting to watch these sites after the Plebes become 4th class men. There is always a significant increase in activity.

235 appointments already?? Oh boy. That's a big number. Son was on the waitlist last year, and this year he hurried everything in (except those darn first semester grades!) well before the EA deadline. We knew he wouldn't be eligible for EA as a college student, but somehow he hoped having things in early would help him get to the top of the stack once his grades were finally in. So, how many offers are extended? I am assuming they over offer due to some not accepting their appointments. It sounds like the longer he waits, the less likely the appointment? He improved in EVERYTHING....PFE, SAT, Math grade. But, if it is to be, I guess it will be. So hard to wait though, and watch your kid wonder where he'll be next summer.

Keep in mind that 108 of those 235 offers were conditional appointments (and a certain percentage of those will not clear their "condition") and some of those offers will be declined in favor of other Academies or other college choices.

With a historical acceptance rate of around 70%-75%, they are probably going to offer somewhere around 390-400 appointments to get a class size of around 275, including the 20 or so CGA Scholar Prepsters that will get appointments as well.

Stay positive! A repeat candidate who improves everything stands a great chance! You better start reading the Parents Handbook. :thumb:

You are correct, there were/will be close to 60 last/this year.

(I said "20 or so", can't "so" be another 40? )

LOL I guess it can.. that makes me feel a bit better.

did anyone figure out how many CGA Scholar books they sent out with the deferral letters ?????

It is a very tough choice for our son USCGA or USMMA. It is like the last real guidance I try to provide before he is on his own implementing a 9-yr decision. Of course I am stressing over his decision more than he is. Even when he is not sure, he goes about his business, whereas I find myself quite preoccupied about it. Hence me finding these groups. I'm finding out, the groups are making me even more preoccupied, but the info in invaluable. All in all - there is not a bad choice to be made. And I think it will matter more what his aspirations might be in 4 years more than now.

Thanks Luigi!!! I know in my heart he belongs at CGA. Proud mom here, but he is a great kid who will do his parents and country proud if accepted.

Now where are my reading glasses.....
