2014 Summer Seminar

With those academic stats you could have barely any athletic involvement and you most likely still would have made it. Congratulations!:thumb:

My DS did not get into Summer Seminar. We are from NC.

Good luck to all!

To those of you who didn't get in:

Don't be discouraged. I was not admitted to the summer seminar and have received both a nomination and appointment to Air Force. Summer seminar is by no means a requirement for admission to the USAFA.

And don't forget -- If you are not accepted to SS, it may have more to do with your region/district/state than about your personal stats. Admissions is trying to generate more interest from those regions/districts/states that historically have few applications/candidates. And you can still visit and tour the Academy on your own (not the same thing, I know).

Good luck to everyone!

I just want to echo what's already been said; don't be discouraged if you weren't selected for SS! I applied to SS last year, did not get in, and now I'm applying to the Academy. I've been told by many people that rejection from SS doesn't mean that you're not competitive for admission to the Academy, and I firmly believe that. Rejection is definitely disappointing now, but please don't give up on your dream! This is a minor set back in the long run, at least, that's what I've come to realize. You can do it!! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

USAFA SS is more of a recruiting tool more than anything else. If someone has a 36 ACT, 2400 SAT, 4.0 UWTD GPA, and is 1 of 800 students, and there is another SS applicant who comes from a more diverse area than the above student but is nowhere near as smart, the more diverse student will get accepted to SS over the smarter student, simply because USAFA Admissions is trying to spread word of the Academy as far as they can. We were told last year at the SS that attending the SS would NOT give us any extra points on our applications. There was not even a spot on the application to put if you had gone to USAFA's SS. There's also only 300 SS spots available, and about 1400 appointments will be offered, so just because you weren't accepted to the SS doesn't mean your chances are any lower for receiving an actual appointment. While the more diverse student was accepted to the SS, the student with the better grades will receive the actual appointment, which is all that matters in the end. Good luck! If you guys have any questions, hit me up.

This makes perfect sense. However, I was looking at the application for a nomination from my congressman and I saw a slot listed for summer seminar. Will this help our nomination application? I believe it shows a true commitment if you attend SS and continue with the appointment process. I might be way off base but I would like anyones input.

Don't get down about not getting into the summer seminar, I didn't either and now I'm appointed to the class of 2018. The seminar is used as a partial marketing tool to get more kids interested in the academy. My friend went last year and was denied the same day I was accepted.

It won't get you extra points. At most if may give the MOC board another area of questioning when you interview with them. Again, if you are accepted to SS -- that's great, take full advantage of the week. If not, it is not a "ding" against your application. Work on what you can control!

Advice

Congrats to those selected....my daughter did’t make it in.

Can some successful applicants post additional information about their app that they believed made them competitive? ACT/SAT scores, leadership, student government, work experience, location, etc.

Thanks and good luck!

I was accepted and personally I don't do too well with standardized testing. I made about an 18 on the plan, and in the low-mid 50s on the PSAT, and I took the SAT in January but left it off as it is not required to put it (it was VERY low). The way the academy measures a candidate is through a composite scoring system that measures test scores, extracurricular activities, etc. I made up in this field because I'm president of a club (French club), was selected as a team captain for my football team (I play two other sports and also fight MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), tied for first in the class in UW GPA (4.0) out of 188, No student gov. positions (I feel they are a bit of a popularity contest so I avoid them), and I'm a captain in the Civil Air Patrol which is the USAF Auxiliary (suggest you invest in this), and I have a part-time job.
I am also in the process of reading an USAFA admissions book for my application to the academy, and it is VERY useful in the application process. It covers nominations, what to wear to interviews, the questions that might be asked, life at the academy, etc. It will answer any questions you might have.
My overall best advice is to keep yourself busy with anything that might boost your chances. I have three AP classes, plus all of the things listed above so I'm quite busy all the time which is stressful but a good thing to get used to for the academy life.
Good luck in your preparations!! Oh also apply to the USNA, USCGA, and USMA summer seminars as they look good to any academy!

Unfortunately I didn't get in either :( is there a way I can possibly know the reason why?

Mine was a straight denial. Although, it seems like others were waitlisted.

For those of you who have indicated you did not get in, did it mention anything about being waitlisted or was it simply a denial?

I was accepted.
My GPA is 3.99 I didn't indicate my LOW ACT score of 23.
I do a lot of leadership stuff (like student council president, student school board rep, and others).
I play volleyball and run track.
I'm from Minnesota.
I SCUBA dive.
Tutor middle schoolers.

Then wrote a hard (as in sad) essay. That really mpacted my life.

And although I am caucasian, I go to school on a Native American reservation. I don't know if that made a difference or not.
