Wow! your first job was an SL-7.. That is pretty lucky.. My first job was on an old 'broke down' ex-Grace Lines C-2 on the China Coast shuttle. Because the ship was on a shuttle run I managed to get a full 6 months of it. I had to wait a few years for my first SL-7 job, because those ships didn't carry 3rd Mates..Yeah, but I did get a bit lucky. I felt the same way you did about my graduation speaker.. I do remember it was Robert J. Blackwell the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Maritime Affairs. I don't remember a thing he said. Mercifully he didn't drone on, because it was hot and 'choker whites' aren't very comfortable, especially in the heat.To be honest, the speaker wasn't that important, but that is probably just me. . . . I was just ready to throw my hat into the air and get down to the Union Hall to register. .
