2015 LOA's recieved

The 'problem' with admissions was the yield was very high very early. This is why they have raised the early LOA standard.

I think the part you said that I bolded above hits the nail on the head with the problem from last year. It wasn't really a huge problem for the admissions department or West Point as a whole, but more for the candidate who didn't complete his file until sometime in late January or February!

Several good posts above. Remember that only the top candidates get LOAs. You can be a strong candidate and not get an LOA.

Do not get too hung-up on SAT scores. They are very important but West Point is looking for the well rounded person - academics, leadership, activities, physical fitness etc.

I was on the Admissions Committee in the past. I saw many cases where the applicant could not understand why they did not get an LOA or admitted. In some cases, the Candidate Statements and teachers evaluations were not a good as they should be. You know specifically what some of your results are (SAT, GPA, Class Standing etc.). However, you do not know how your Candidate Statement was graded and you do not know what your teachers said about you. I suspect that many of you did not get an LOA due to these factors.

Last year acceptance to offers was high, period.
They could have assembled a Class of 1500 NC with the pool they had.

2LT's make $69,000? I dont think that's right. . . at least not for your average 2LT.

according to goarmy.com a brand new 2LT makes $32,947 basic pay

and Forbes released their 2010 rankings tonight. West Point is #4 this year. Will this change any of the possible admissions trends from 2014 to 2015? Probably not. A #1 ranking is still incredible.

Now USMA is #4, its graduates don't make $69,000 anymore (as confirmed by Forbes last year).

Just for clarification -
A LOA can be issued to qualified candidates based evaluation of the following:
a) PCQ
and
b) Receipt of 6th semester transcript
and
c) SAT/ACT scores

DS indicates these three were mentioned at SLS as minimum requirement to even be considered for "early" LOA's. And that reading/math SAT needed to be 700 or better, and very high A average (3.8-3.9 unweighted from memory). With a "not at risk" CFA needed for most candidates. (again, from memory)

The context of the discussion was early LOA's for candidates not recruited for other reasons. (Athletics, underrepresented districts, etc)

These stats are very consistent with "early admissions letters" from any mainstream competitive college, so it was not really a surprise. For any early admissions type process you are being evaluated on just core stats, not EC's, so they are quite high. Much higher than the published averages for the whole class.

But as many have said, and will say- you can't try to game the LOA selection process. You can influence your core stats, with SAT's being one of the fastest/easiest to improve, along with your CFA.

If you take BAH, BAS, and health care into account, the civilian equivalent is about $60k.

Agreed on all points.
You don't have to have your SOEs or candidate statements in to get an early LOA.
LOAs are also used to make sure that West Point meets their composition goals. That doesn't just mean race and gender but also leaders, intellectuals and athletes.

Are the last of the LOAs sent out? I just recently completed my file (except for the CFA). My SATs are pretty decent (2120).

I have a question for those who have received LOAs. Did you receive your LOA after you completed your entire file?

I have completed everything but my Statements and was told I was competitive for an LOA by West Point and my admission officer. Just wondering if I have to get my Statements in before I am considered.

Thanks!

My file was complete, but some have received one with only their transcripts and test scores in. It varies.

I don't think statements are required for an LOA. The basics are test scores and transcripts.

From a couple of years' experience as an outsider [admittedly, not an admissions officer], it is a balancing act: at what point do you give them enough information for them to decide that they want you? If you have easily identifiable markers [recruited athlete, superb SATs+GPA+ extras +WCS, identified qualified minority, some other talent) they will say, "Yes, we definitely want this candidate" and issue the LOA. Keep feeding them what's in your control until they do [HINT: Sooner rather than later], but don't get discouraged: APPOINTMENT is the goal. At some point in the process, the Admissions Board will shift its emphasis from one to the other.
