Hi, I recently got accepted to the USNA Summer Seminar session 3 and I researched what I should prepare for, but I am looking for advice/tips for summer Seminar.

Thank you

My son is also attending session 3. My advice is to enjoy it, but don't goof off or attract negative attention. Work hard at everything you do.

- Go in with a good attitude and soak up the whole experience.
- Prepare for the CFA by practicing the events in order.
- Step up and try new things. Volunteer to call cadence or do commands at the table.
- Keep your room neat.
- The classes are really fun and hands on so pay attention.
- Just do the absolute best you can all the time and Ask questions.

Oh and please don't be on your cell phone the whole time. During the Travis Manion Foundation presentation a kid in front of me was texting and talking through the presentation. I tapped her on the shoulder and kindly suggested she put her phone away and listen. She put the phone away. I thought it was over but after the presentation during Blue and Gold she found me and said thank you that she really needed me to tell her that. Another person in one of my classes was constantly checking his phone. He missed out on some really cool demonstrations. Honestly just leave your phone in your room if you are going to be tempted by it.

Can someone tell me if the CFA is done indoors, outdoors or both? Any suggestions on sneakers. Thanks!

We did the CFA indoors last year, but that may change from year to year depending on circumstances. It's definitely a lot easier with air conditioning!!

Thanks mprince2021, trying to determine whether to train with an outdoor or indoor sneaker.

CFA during NASS has been held inside Wesley Brown Field House in recent years. It is a temperature and humidity controlled environment. As for the shoes, I think the answer you are looking for is "not trail running shoes".

Even if run outside it will either be a track or a mile course on pavement. More than likely it will be inside.

Got it, thanks.

I attended NASS last year! Biggest pieces of advice:
1. Prep yourself for your CFA. Run the test at least once on your own before you arrive.
2. Show motivation. Especially during the "mock sea trials" we were all very tired, but it's important to keep a positive attitude and motivate your squad mates. The instructors will notice.
3. Make friends with your squad. The experience is great, but sharing it with people you like makes it even better. Try to get acquainted with your squad and I promise you won't regret it.

This question is about cadets and parents who fly into to BWI on day 1... do parents and cadets separate at BWI or is there a shared ride to USNA and then parents and cadets go their different ways...I understand there are parent tours on Day 1, but they seem to occur before "arrive by" time of 4pm. My question is basically, do parents need to get a car at the airport to get to the tours or can they accompany the midshipmen's transportation of cadets? Thanks!

Respectfully, I am at a loss to understand who you mean by "cadets" in a Naval Academy Summer Seminar thread, so I will start an answer to what I think you are asking, confident other posters with recent NASS experience or others will join in. You will get clarity.

I assumed, based on past knowledge, but perhaps things have changed, HS students attending NASS report in at a designated time and place, having arrived in Annapolis through their own means, from BWI or elsewhere. Parents ditto.

I will be interested to learn if there is USNA-provided transportation. Change is a reliable constant of the military.

Thank you--I guess I'm not sure what students who attend the USNA Summer Seminar are called (thought "cadets")...I know that midshipmen provide transportation from BWI between 9AM and 4PM on Day 1...just wondering about traveling parents who are interested in attending the parents' program...thanks again.

We could call them NASSters...but not Cadets around USNA. Glad to know about rides for the NASS attendees - now that I think about it, I do know that is an option, especially for those traveling solo. My GUESS at this point - parents are on their own.

But be patient. Someone will know.

Double check your NASS acceptance email - rising HS seniors can get a ride from BWI, or being drop off by parents through Gate 8. I don't believe parents are allowed to ride the shuttle, but you should drop a note to the NASS OIC to confirm. How 'bout letting us all know what he/she says?

Is a rental car needed after NASS day 1 (i.e. what is your mode of transportation for the remainder of the time in the Annapolis/DC/Baltimore area)? If so, it might be easier to rent one at the airport and drop your DS/DD off as ktnatalk mentioned.

very physical so prepare for the CFA and the heat.
but it's also academic. you sit in a class for 4 hours for half the seminar learning stuff ( like presentations, you don't get tested on any of it on faux i-day)

get prepared to memorize a good length of information (a page front & back worth).
and best of all, mentally prepare yourself for mini i-day and sea trials. best part of the entire seminar.

i-day was amazing. my chill squad leader yelled himself hoarse. half of squad cried (i didn't! but it was still pretty bad).
later, on our last day, he told us he "cried a little" telling his mom about how he made a bunch of high school juniors cry. My squad leader was great.
also, meal times are the best times. So many hilarious memories formed there.

as you can see, i had a pretty amazing time last year and i hope you will too!

We flew with our son the night before, rented a car, stayed in Maryland, and took him to USNA the next day. We then stayed for the private tour which some NASS students even joined before checking in for the week. Following the tour, parents have an opportunity to listen to a parent panel and ask questions. We then left later that afternoon for a vacation and picked him at the end of the week when he was through with the session. We did see bus loads of juniors come in without parents, too. Be prepared to have your shirt tucked in and hats off. Once you step through those doors with your paper work your parents don't go with you. Great experience for students and parents.
