2020 Appointments

UPDATE- DS checked his messages after basketball practice last night and he had the call from our MOC saying his USNA appointment was forthcoming. No portal change so far this morning but it looks like he has a choice between USNA and USAFA. This has overwhelmed him a bit. He spent so much effort and work hoping to get into one and now he is in two and may still get into USMA as well. He has also been named as finalist in two very nice plan B schools full tuition scholarships. So far just about every door he has knocked on has opened and he wasn't expecting that. He is really blessed and he knows it but now he realizes that the decision isn't going to be based on just which one he gets in to. He is in an enviable situation but hard for kid who isn't even 18 yet. I think he has realized that this will shape the rest of his life.

Congratulations! Your lift will also be changed forever, assuming SA will be his choice eventually.

My DS is in the waiting category. USNA is the only SA he applied. His plan B is NROTC.

The other day I showed a friend USNA Class 2019 stats, she was not impressed. Class SAT was pretty low for competitive school like USNA (her child got into Columbia ED). USNA SAT stats math 620-690 & Reading 590-670 (50% had this range?) does this mean other half had over or below this range.

You also have to remember a few things. USNA has over 30 D1 sports teams that recruit and prior enlisted factored in to these scores. An Ivy has athletes, but not as many teams. USNA brings in 200+ from prep schools each year. Not saying all those preps and athletes all have lower scores, I think most would be all over the map. Its just USNA does things a little differently. Also USNA you have to pass a PT test and physical. Pretty sure Columbia could care less they can run a 1.5 miles in 10:30. Columbia probably has some prep kids, but these are probably more along the lines of what we do with Foundation kids.

Pretty sure it is the middle 50%. In other words 25% are above this range and 25% are below. Remember they must score this and pass a rigorous multi part fitness test and pass a picky medical and eye exam and show leadership merit as well. Its really not a apples to apples comparison. These SA kids go over way more hurdles.

Not a straight comparison. Columbia kids aren't passing a med exam and physical test. I always say Service Academy kids have to be able to walk on water. And I think that's accurate.

You right, "letsdothis", they have to , walk on water, split the Red Sea, lead thousands through the gap even if they dont want to go, and ace the ACT/SAT....simultaneously! And after that, they may or may not get a nom, and then they get to wait while admissions looks for that one thing that makes them "good enough", on that day, in that hour, in that minute, in that second!

In addition to the excellent points made by others above is trying to convey the concept of WCS....which can be a little difficult for those outside of all of this to really understand. If you say ther'e the physical or the medcial or the leadership without putting it in it's entire context it's easy for them to be judgemental....soooooo Ms. Columbia...no doubt your snowflake is a terrific student with great test scores who took AP classes particularly focused on STEM incidentally, and finished in the top 10% of her class (well we assume that we can say that can't we...she wasn't you say?) and now that represents 100% of her presentation vs. some SA kid where it represents 60%. She played a varsity sport and letter...captain perhaps...student body VP or above....work out like a maniac...show some real leadership and character....and on and on and on. How's that playing field look like now? Level or not?

Totally agreed. I also happen to be applying to Columbia, and while they may have more impressive test score stats, i can say that my USNA application was far tougher to complete, simply because of everything that has to go into it. Most of my friends didn't really understand that passing DoDMERB/CFA/Obtaining Noms were such an integral portion of the app. For most colleges, all you need is some well composed essays. Even the interviews for Ivy vs SA are drastically different. When I had my Columbia interview, the interviewer said at the beginning that it probably wouldnt have any noticeable benefit to the application, and only spent 30 mins with every candidate, unlike my BGO, who talked with my family, and then me personally for nearly 2 hours.

Just to add yet more to this. Once you get into Columbia (or any other school.), as long as you pay tuition and don't get expelled for something stupid, you are pretty much all set. They don't care if you stay for 5-6 years as long as your money keeps coming in.

At any SAs, your average cadet will have 2 physical fitness tests every year, military tests, inspections, required combative and water haze classes, commissioning and medical requirements with NO guarantee of graduating until graduation day! There is no 5 year college plan there. Graduate in 4 or bye-bye. Remember getting in is the "easy" part. Staying in and graduating is a lot harder with attrition rates in the 20%+ range.

And BTW they all graduate with a B.S. Degree and have a guaranteed job for the next 5 years. I bet Columbia can not guarantee that for its graduating class.

Navymom17, we are in San Antonio, Texas, just waiting! One candidate who went to NASS with DS in June was appointed earlier in month. He was JrROTC 4 years with that nom. GO NAVY!

Reading all the responses above it sounds to me like your friend had a little case of sour grapes! One of those parents that always has to one up everyone else's child.

Just saw that I received an LOA on the portal!!! Although I don't know why it's and LOA, as I have completed all requirements?

Happened to my sons portal a week ago today (7 days). He had his appointment 5 days later! He didn't have any outstanding requirements either- I think it is a form letter kinda thing!

With all due respect, who gives a good gosh darn whether your friend is impressed or not? That's about the worst reason I can think of for attending any school, especially a SA.

I duped this from the Jonas Storm thread, for all '20 plebes-to-be. This could be you in the next 4 years, and if there is any accumulation this weekend in Annapolis, stand by for more videos.

There is actually fun to be had there. This is the famous 1st vs. 2nd Regiment 2010 snow fight.
