2020 Hopefuls

First post here. USNA candidate for 2020. I had a completed application (CFA, Interview, DODMERB, all forms, etc. - a nomination) on July 3rd. That day I received the status "complete pending review." I take it I had to be one of the first applicants done. Looking for honest answers. Do you think I was looked over for an LOA? Thanks for your time.

My kid completed everything on Aug. 28th, That afternoon he also received the status "Complete pending review." just like you. No LOA yet, but he is not worrying.

You were not looked over. "Pending Review" means just that. Admissions is still making the sausage, some varieties are made quick, other varieties require more ingredients then are in the 'official' Application.

These additional ingredients were not officially written down for you to check off, they could be the variables that you may not be considering when you ask yourself "why I didn't get an LOA"? Suppose you are a great student but there are 1200 others equally as good RIGHT now? Ok, out of 17K applicants that begin the process the same day as you, it sure is possible 1,200 finished up admission packages by Sept. 1st and these were stacked with yours, all awaiting review. It is a physical process, wading thru stuff like this has a process that is spelled out; maybe your package was put aside because your 'edge' is the fact you are being recruited by Navy Coaching ? (for example) Imagine a process for the many in the 1,200 that are not being sports recruited? These could be some of the LOAs that issue because they were deemed a 'no-doubt' qualified kid?

For this example, many of these applications of recruited kids have a note placed in the package notifying the Reviewers of a request : 'If Applicant is deemed qualified and approved by Admissions, it is requested that Admissions kindly set package aside to await additional input/actions of Sports Recruitment' - that input to be incoming from a recruiting Coach who has placed the 'watch' tag on your file before you finished it. Certain Sports placed 'tags' on specific recruits packages in July and these Coaches (in charge of recruiting for a particular Sport) are actually notified by Admissions every-time the kid updates an item in his portal. The day the recruited kid sees the "complete pending review." in his Portal, rest assured, the Coach recruiting him has also received the notification. I can tell you that much information is fact.

Now to some educated speculation relative to any release of an LOA for a hypothetical kid being recruited- An LOA could easily be held up and be dependent on further input of the recruiting Coach. Perhaps this input will be the result of an upcoming CVW that has been scheduled. Lets say a Coach uses a scheduled CVW to also invite the kid to a " stop by and see me" meeting while attending the CVW. It seems to me an LOA could easily be delayed based on the results of that visit, the recruiting Coach 's final input being the catalyst of many actions that will occur after the CVW event. Perhaps it will trigger the LOA, maybe it triggers a usage of non-MOC nomination that will be set aside, the only way it is conveyed is verbally because if a later obtained MOC happens, there is no need to use the 'chit' and an LOA is issued just before the MOC nominations are released, or a decision not to issue an LOA, making the kid get a MOC like everyone else because the Coach decided to pass on the kid. Just saying , look at just these few possible scenarios.!

Let's face it, why is an LOA so desired? An LOA is the only *real* instant feedback a kid can get from this Institution, as it is in writing ! NO LOA? Then no feedback and a kid will not hear anything from the Institution until 2016 when the kid will get an envelope in the mail; thin or fat, it is as simple as that.

Greetings from Pennsylvania.

Just a quick question:

My counselor only sent my transcripts two days ago. My math rec also went in at around the same time. There's no way they would consider the application without transcripts or recs, right?

Well we are going to try to enjoy the ride by attending CVW next week with DS and I am thinking of starting a different thread "How Many Bottles of Wine Did It Take Hopeful Candidate Moms To Survive The Process Of Naval Academy Admissions Regardless Of Results" . I have already lost count.....

Dads, you can pick your poison.

Why does it take so long for usna to process things into application. Transcript takes four to six weeks, and dod results into usna system take up to four weeks. Why so long? USMA is so much faster.

If we both make it to I day...We shall test that number of bottles of wine...

Murfthesurf,

Thank you for taking the time to write to me. The guidance is much appreciate during this time of the process. Sure opens my mind to many new things. Thank you.

@murfthesurf
Very well said, very nice.

@fifi5 and proudofmyboy
Hope you can stagger in to the CVW day.. :)

We [parents] will also be there next week for the CVW. We know that the chances of our son getting in to USNA is probably less than 5% [very low :) ]. Still we are making the trip for his sake. He wants us to come and take a look at the academy. We are first time military applicants/family.

Wish you all the very best for applicants and the families.

Hang in there! Actual percentages if he is 3Q with a nom are higher than that! Obviously geographical play a role too. So hang in there focus on the 3Q part and nom and let the cards fall where they may. Many folks get in on the second try too. So if it's the right place keep at it!

For those going to CVW..You are going to love it. DS had his visit last fall as a Junior. The Yard is an amazing place. Ask lots of questions and take in the whole experience.

CVW weekend is such a great opportunity to really get a flavor of life at USNA. Especially the opportunity to spend time in Bancroft.

@midmom20
Congratulations. Hope he gets the LOA and or the nomination soon, best wishes.
A question for you. How do you know about the 3Q?
I know that DoDmerb lets you know that you are medically qualified. But how about the other two - academic and CFA?
DO they post it in the portal saying you are 3Q?
Thanks.

We never got notified that my DS was 3q. But he made it to the waitlist last year so we had to assume he was.. The tough one is " scholastically qualified " because its not only academics here that play in but leadership and extracurriculars. It's not as cut and dry as the other two are.

Honestly, maybe I misspoke or wishful thinking. medically qualified yes....passed CFA at Summer Seminar and academically strong. So in my mind, its up to the review board and securing the nomination. Full steam ahead. :)

Wanted to start a new thread for official canidates starting the application process for the Class of 2020. My DS has begun his journey. He attended CVW back in January and attended NASS session 2. I found this forum to be both educational and supportive. I have learned so much.

I've done a lot of reading on the forum and learned a lot as well. I may have missed it, but don't recall seeing a reference to Sue Ross' excellent book. Amazon for Kindle, about 10 bucks. I've read it on recommendation of a BGO. Many questions answered and very informative, FWIW.

USNA does not tell you if you get the Q for scholastics. Looking at stats and talking to a BGO should help a candidate gauge whether they are in the ballpark for the Q or not. You will know the Q for medical and for the CFA.
