Hello all,

I am planning on applying for the 2021 OTS Rated Board, specifically to be a pilot. Can anyone help me gauge how competitive I will be?

I have a BA in Political Science & Economics, and now I am earning my MBA in Management.

Age: 22 years old
AFOQT: P 88, N 21, A 69, V 69, Q 66
Undergraduate GPA: 3.97
Graduate GPA: 3.83
PCSM: 71
Flight Hours: 61 (Private Pilot License)

I have completed two internships throughout my college career, both with the federal government. Also, for leadership experience I was the Team Captain of my college football team (NCAA Division I). Any advice would be appreciated!

Pilot score isn't bad, but could be better. NAV score is pretty meh. If you feel you can improve them, I'd strongly recommend retaking the AFOQT and bringing those A, V, and Q scores up because you're competing with people in the 80s and 90s for all those.

If you've got the time and money, I'd try and get as many flight hours as you can and bring up that PCSM. It's a solid score, but if you can bring it up into the 80s or even 90s your chances go up dramatically. Also, an instrument rating is a nice feather in the cap and will pay dividends at UPT.

All in all, you seem like a competitive candidate, but I've seen candidates with better scores get denied. Also, despite the pilot shortage, we've actually got a surplus of UPT students and new pilots right now, so acceptance rates for pilot are going to start decreasing I imagine. Try and leave as little to chance as you possibly can.

Also, just from personal observation, athletes seem to do extremely well at UPT. Quick-thinking, confidence, and hand-eye coordination that you learn from certain sports will make you a better pilot.

Thank you for your response! I took the AFOQT only a few months ago, so I have to wait 150 days to take it again. Unfortunately, I won't be able to retake AFOQT/TBAS by the time my application has to be submitted. However, if I get 19 more flight hours my PCSM will go up to 75. Doesn't seem like much but hopefully it will make a difference.

Wow, I had read online there was a pilot shortage but I didn't know about the surplus of UPT candidates... thank you for bringing that to my attention!

Thanks!

Every point you can get anywhere counts. Competition for the board can sometimes come down to fractions of a point. That mentality will pay off at UPT as well where the difference between who tracks and drops what they want also comes down to fractions of a point. If the OTS rated board doesn't pay off, also consider applying to some guard and reserve units as well. You've got scores that should catch the interest of a few units enough to where they'd probably offer an interview. With those positions how you act during the interview matters almost as much as scores, which could benefit you.
