Just got notice that my son's summer internship was canceled. We knew it was coming but it is still upsetting. He was really looking forward to it.
What are your feelings for the summer of 2021? Do you think students who were canceled this summer will have priority placement next year for the same internships?

My son’s entire summer training was cancelled. He is looking into getting a job for the summer - there are some opportunities in the area but with varying risk for COVID-19 exposure. But without a summer job, he will be bored senseless. I guess he needs to get permission from USNA to get a job.

Maybe load up on STAP courses? At least it would provide some "getting ahead" flexibility in future academic schedules:) And I think you are right, if anyone AD wants an "outside" job, they usually need their commands OK. I would imagine that with the restrictions already placed on service members, that internships, jobs, training, anything outside the house or base may be difficult this year. Maybe things will change by July?

My son might take a summer course to lighten his load this fall.
Unfortunately, we will probably have to pay the tuition.
What is a STAP course? Are they required by AROTC cadets?

Sorry, you mentioned USNA and getting permission, my bad, I assumed your son attended USNA. If he is in any branch of ROTC, as long as he is not considered "active duty" then he should be free to do whatever he wants over the summer. FYI, STAP courses are "Summer Term Academic Program" courses offered by the academies to cadets/mids over the summer.

The agency providing the internship wasn't the one who pulled the plug, it was the Army. Must be a DoD policy. I see a father/son camping trip coming this summer.

When I was a mid, I had about a month of leave each summer and had jobs two out of my three summers. One year it was delivering furniture and the following year it was as a night watchman (for which I had to get a Private Investigator License). This was for beer/fun money and I did not ask permission. Much more recently, when my son was a mid, he ended up getting paid to do something that he was already doing for someone and
permission was never discussed. In the years since then, I've talked about it with some former senior USNA leaders and nobody thought it wrong.

Bottom Line in an era of COVID, I'd venture that if its an extension of what he might already be doing then it is probably OK. Examples might be
helping out or personal trainer at a gym, lifeguard at a community pool, etc.

If I had to speculate... if summer training is canx for USNA and the majority of Mids are home (possibly taking classes even), I would venture to guess that USNA would probably give some guidance on the work piece. A lot of Mids would want to take up some work over the summer.
