2024 USNA Football Season

Navy hasn't won at Air Force since 2012. Don't underestimate the power of the 12th man - 7,000 foot elevation. I think the Navy is definitely the better team so far this year, but the home field advantage is something else up there.
Yes, throw any assumptions out the window when’s it’s SA on SA, especially if you haven’t looked good recently and you have a rival SA at your house.

San Jose State, coached by Ken Niumatalolo, beat Air Force at Colorado Springs earlier this month. I wonder if Coach Ken is sharing any intel with Coach Newberry. It is going to be a tough game. I really like this Navy team.

Sea level to mountain elevation overnight is pretty rough…
I was honestly kind of surprised that they weren't coming in a day or so before.

There are some other USNA teams playing this weekend, for those looking to catch multiple games! USNA Rugby will play USAFA at Infinity Park in Glendale CO (which is the home of the CO professional rugby team) - basically Denver - at 7pm on Friday, and women's hockey will play at 915pm (so late) on Saturday at World Arena in CO Springs. I think there are a few other games, too.

I think I read or heard in news conference that Football if traveling out Thursday. Makes sense as game Saturday is 10am local time.

I wasn't aware that Coach Ken had landed the big job at SJSU (I'd known about the initial landing at UCLA). So he traded one Bay Area (Chesapeake) for another (San Francisco). Very happy for him, and very glad to see he's had early success.

Not surprised that SJSU beat Air Force. If anyone knows how to beat the SA-style triple option, it would be the guy who ran it himself and faced it twice a year. I wonder what kind of offensive system he runs at SJSU, now that he presumably has better athletes.

I was very unhappy with how Coach Ken was let go, even if I believed it was time for a change. Most long coaching tenures -- even successful ones -- run their course. I believe that was the case at USNA, but the way it was unceremoniously handled by the AD was disgraceful -- completely lacking the class and dignity that was owed someone who'd led the Mids to heights not seen in a very long time. Glad there seems to be a happy ending for both Coach Ken and USNA.

My 3/C daughter is a monster football fan in general and the Ravens in particular. As a toddler she would sit in my lap for the entire duration of a Ravens game. I've never seen such concentration. In 2012, when she was 8 years old she called for the firing of Cam Cameron, the Ravens' OC, after losing to the Texans in week 7. He was fired in week 14 after a loss to the Redskins. They went on to win the Super Bowl. She's loving Navy football right now.

As you might imagine Coach Ken's offense is different. He brought in an offensive coordinator predicated on slinging the football. He has some recruiting advantages at SJSU - namely the transfer portal. There are some huge players on the roster. I was impressed listening to his initial press conference where he outlined his vision for the program. One would have thought he was talking to the Naval Academy family. He is the same humble man. My DW, an alumna, never attended a football game at SJSU. I think she'd go now should SJSU put Navy on the schedule again.

I was disappointed for him when he was passed over for the BYU and Arizona jobs. Both bigger programs in bigger conferences, so don't think anyone at USNA would've begrudged him a promotion.

If memory serves, there was concern at BYU about whether he could handle a non-SA program, and concern at Arizona that he'd run the triple option. I think good coaches can coach anywhere, and glad he's getting another chance.
