Perfect football day in Naptown - clear, 70s, low humidity. Beautiful flyover. Brigade looks crisp and shiny in their summer whites.

Currently Navy 2️⃣8️⃣ VMI ⭕️, top of third quarter.
We are in the “couch suite” at home in front of the big screen with surround sound for this one.

Okay, plebes doing push-ups today, but 2029 parents will not be able to see faces.

New Navy AD Michael Kelly was just interviewed - noted near the end “Coach Newberry’s beard is the best in college football today” when asked if he was going to grow one, said he knew he couldn’t compete.

I jinxed it above when VMI scored right after I posted. Navy answered well though.

Gonna be some SORE bic ps/triceps!!

Someone figure out the total reps. I’ve been ‘celebrating’ too much

The Dense Beard of Victory is a bit scruffy and still in fall camp mode. But I fully expect it to get back to in season form against UAB next week.

It was BTA in DTA today. Great season opener, team looked strong.

Easy there, tiger. Navy played a team that was 1-11 last year and only scored 149 points the entire season. Frankly it's a little embarrassing that Navy would schedule a team like that for the season opener..there are a couple of high schools that would have given them a better challenge.

"For the 2025 season, a total of 126 FBS vs. FCS games are scheduled, with the majority occurring in Week 1. While the exact number of FBS teams opening with an FCS opponent will depend on the schedule, the total number of such games is 126 and all are home games for the FBS teams."
A.I. summary, so may be inaccurate.

However, all three Div 1 SAs opened with home games vs FCS schools, and so did a whole lot of FBS teams.

Navy certainly does not have a cupcake schedule this year; I don't begrudge them starting the season with a tuneup game.

Army did the same thing - different result. It’s very common for FBS schools to play a FCS school in the season opener.
FBS schools play FCS schools all the time, that's not the issue. It's actually pretty common for an FCS team to win a few games each season. Just like when Delaware beat Navy a couple of years back.

This is about putting a team on the schedule that had no business being on there. Most might not recognize Carleton State, but they have a solid program that made it to the second round of the FCS playoffs last year. VMI is nowhere close to that level. Nothing against VMI, but I am not sure they should even have a football program anymore, at least Div 1. It's just too small of a school.

The insult to injury? The Brigade decided to make a derogatory "spirit button" illustrating VMI as children playing "dress up" compared to a line of Marines (which they are not) that deploy (which they have not done). It was in extremely poor taste and just looks like bullying. I would expect more from a school that everyone loves to heap praise on.

Bottom line, be better because from the outside looking in, it's not a great view.

Tarleton State not Carleton State. Every spirit button taunts the opposing team, the Army Navy sprit button was Bill literally whacking an Army Mule Piñata. The Bowl Game one was Bill blasting thru the Sooners Wagon. I for one loved this games spirit button and I know that much of the Brigade shares that opinion. The new Supe is an ultra motivated Marine who played football, of course he’s gonna be competitive and poke some fun at VMI. There was a very high ranking VMI grad at the game who came to the game just because the Supe joked to him that Navy would crush his Alma mater…

That's my error, only because I have a friend that went to Carleton College and had that on the brain.

With that being said, there's a big difference between "Bill blasting the Sooners Wagon" or "whacking a pinata" and insulting a SMC illustrating a child in a VMI parade dress uniform. A school, by the way that commissions about 60% of their graduating class into the armed forces. That's an insult, not "fun" or "spirit". Everyone knew that VMI didn't have a chance, you didn't have to be ugly. When Navy plays opponents like Notre Dame or Ohio State, where the odds are significantly stacked against the Midshipmen, you don't see them being degrading. It's always a tone of respect from the Buckeyes or Fighting Irish. Navy needs to act the same way when they are in that position. It's called class.

But VMI also has a say in being scheduled. Typically, the schools arrange non-conference games. If you think about it, there is some marketing value for VMI. High school students watching Navy football are probably interested in the military or some type of regimented lifestyle. That's the market VMI needs to market to. Notre Dame is a traditional matchup since the Navy kept Notre Dame's doors open during WWII. The last Ohio State matchup was in 2014, when Navy was independent. There is one in 2029, but that is likely due to Ted Carter, a prior Superintendent, being the President at Ohio State. That said, you are entitled to your opinion, but I think you are going a little high and right with the whole spirit button thing. Spirit buttons have been around for decades and they get approved by leadership (as in commissioned Navy/Marine Corps officers) before the games. There was a button for the Delaware game that we lost. It's all in good-natured fun and never sincere. The mids even tip their cap to the opponents during march-ons. I always found a cordial atmosphere at football games. The only time I really saw disrespectful conduct was the Army-Navy game, but those were isolated incidents.

Tarleton state is a lot different then VMI though. If i'm not mistaken they won an fcs playoff game last year against Drake...

These games are often scheduled years out. Sometimes 5+ years out. Tarleton State got paid $250k to play Army. That is a good chunk of change for their program. VMI probably got paid too. VMI is coming off a down season. Tarleton State had a good season last year. There is no way of projecting that when schedules are made years in advance. These ‘warm up’ games don’t always go as planned (Navy and Delaware). The dollars the programs make from these games are huge and they get experience playing at the full D1 level. Navy will have a much tougher test next weekend. The game did what it was meant to do, test the team on game conditions, get out of the game with no major injuries and see what they need to work on this week.

No FCS team is “forced” to play any FBS team. As someone above said, they are often paid to play, literally. There was the big to-do last year (or was it earlier?) when ND paid an FCS team several million dollars - and the FCS team won!

Navy plays ND annually, despite losing 56 of 60 games in the 61 years (no game in 2020). The main reason is money (minor reason is tradition).

I’m sure VMI looks at playing Navy as Navy looks at playing ND: we make a ton of money and - just maybe - we’ll play great, catch them on an off day, and win.

The primary concern with disparate talent is injury. Not a huge issue with an FCS team playing a SA. More of an issue when an FCS team plays a top 10 FBS team.

There is also the exposure the school gets. People looking into XXX school, they may have not known about. The ads, commentary, school and academic profiles. Exposure is a good thing. And they paid as already pointed out for that exposure. Even if they loose.

It’s a win-win for schools involved. Plus us hungry football fans get to talk football 🏈

You are taking it WAY too serious. The buttons are all in good fun with the trash talk. It’s hilarious. Relax!

Great start to the season and a good way for all the guys on the team to get some exposure on the field. Took out the starters at the end of the first half and the other guys looked strong in there.

VMI got a nice passing touchdown that they deserved to celebrate and a lot of the keydets stayed around and enjoyed the tailgates + annapolis bars.

Only one more home game for me until I head out to my next duty station. Gonna miss Navy football gamedays!
