Walk in to Billard Hall and the senses are stimulated with everything going on. The Drum and Bugle Corps energizes the crowd with familiar songs. Officers, faculty, staff, and members from the New London community are dressed smartly throughout the first floor seats. Cadet spectators chant for their favorite boxer. And finally, the handful of boxers that have persevered through the tournament grace each bout with determination and courage. This is the Coast Guard Academy’s Regimental Boxing Open.
The tournament is an extension of the intramural boxing program that is offered to the Cadet Corps in the fall. Although boxers have the opportunity to compete at Friday Night Fights and various National Collegiate Boxing Association events throughout the year, cadets have anxiously awaited the opportunity to box their way to the top among their peers.
The tournament finals are held in historic Billard Hall which hosted boxing ‘Smokers’ during the 1930s and 40s along with the 1945 NCAA Eastern Regional Championship. The first rounds of the ‘Reg’ Open Tournament are held in the Alumni Center’s 3rd Deck Boxing Gym. With its recent inception, the finals of the Open have become one of the most anticipated events on the Academy's calendar, as Billard Hall comes to life for this unique sporting events favored by cadets, community members, faculty, staff, and dozens of local alumni.
"This is a great opportunity for the cadets to box in front of a home crowd," coach Tom Barile says of the tournament. "This aspect raises the bar of competitiveness amongst all the boxers. It also peaks the interest of those cadets in the audience who envision themselves in the ring desiring a spot in the finals to box in front of the Corps.”
The Regimental Boxing Open Championships showcase the most elite Cadet boxers, each performing in 3-round matches within their weight classes. The winners of the Championship move on to the Regional Competition in order to qualify for the National College Boxing Championships held each spring.
In addition to the entertainment aspects of the Regimental Open, the event helps develop CGA’s strong community ties with New London’s Non-Profit ‘Heavy Hitters USA’ and Whaling City Boxing Club. As a free event to the public, the event draws hundreds of community members to support the cadets in the ring.
