2nd LT on way out over TikTok post

Obviously very poor taste - but there is so much worse out there on social media.

According to the article, he posted what he said was a “joke” about Jewish people killed in the Holocaust and you think they should have let it slide? On the basis that there’s worse out there on social media? I’m glad the military has higher standards than that. The forums have become a scary place lately...

I’m no expert, but this seems like a valid response. The guy was posting in uniform to a large audience. My (albeit lowly) standing is that if you’re in uniform, you represent the American military. You shouldn’t be using your uniform for internet fame, nor should you be doing/saying something so stupid.

This punishment was more than fair in my opinion.

I made no such statements so please don't attempt to 'read between the lines'. You do not know my holocaust feelings whatsoever.

Apologies if I misunderstood but your statement that it was in poor taste but there’s worse out there seemed to imply you thought they were too harsh. Not sure what you were trying to say, if not that.

According to Task & Purpose -

"Friehofer did not appear in uniform in the video, though he does appear in uniform in many other clips and photos posted to his social media accounts."

That’s what I was getting at: he was using his uniform for popularity. Sure, it wasn’t in the specific TikTok, but in people’s minds, they see him as the “Army TikToker.” I just don’t like the use of the uniform in any TikTok (see the TikTok Boots Instagram for my reasoning), much less this guy.

During the entire 4/c year at USCGA they aren't allowed the use any social media platform. DS said you learn that its not that important and since then he rarely uses social media.

Oh, how nice that would be. For us it was AIM (AOL Instant Messenger). And we could only use phones in phone booths (there were phone booths in companies) or just outside the mailroom (which was pretty cold in the winter). You couldn't use a cell phone in your room.

This is overkill, especially when there’s top enlisted leaders in the military (hint, hint, the current Chief MSGT of the AF) who have been caught using social media to ridicule and straight-up slander junior enlistedmen publicly on multiple occasions, and then face no punishment.

There is freedom of speech granted to every American, but not while in uniform. I don't understand the propensity for people wanting to "post" videos of themselves. If you feel compelled to post, just do it out of uniform while not on duty. There may still be repercussions, but getting thrown out of the military usually isn't one of them. This guy was stupid. Do stupid things, win stupid prizes.

Not sure about this now considering the "60-day stand down" and search for extremists in the military ranks set forth by the new SecDef. Will probably depend on the definition of "extremist".

I agree with you. I also read the article. I think this seems like a good response.

Please expand, this is news to me

"...Within hours, Bass and her social media team took the article out of her post..."

I think before I considered having a "social media team", I would consider not using social media.
