With the start of second semester, I have started my Rugby season. My concern is the chance of receiving a devastating injury that would cancel my appointment. I have my appointment for Air Force, and I'm on the national waiting list for both Navy and Army. I love playing rugby but the risk of injury is fairly high (several kids got injured in our team scrimmage this past weekend, and one tore his MCL). While I like playing the sport, my appointment to any one of the academies comes first.

One of my teammates on the team has received his appointment to the Merchant Marine Academy and is fairly certain that he will quit rugby. He told me that one of the higher ups at the USMMA discouraged him from playing.

So my question is should I play despite the chance of injury, or should I quit? I'm pretty nervous about this so please advice.

Think about these questions:
1- Do you hold a leadership position on the rugby team?
2- Did you state on your application that you would letter in rugby this coming season or that you would hold a leadership position on the team?
3- Are you planning to play rugby for the AFA or one of the other SAs?
4- How much do you love the sport?

If you have played rugby for three seasons and have not been injured...then your chances are not great you will be injured this season.

My son wrestled after he received his appointment to West Point. It was tough to watch those last few matches. He is also an expert skier and went on a week long ski trip....he decided to skip the 30 foot cliffs.

I understand your concerns very well!

You've answered you own question. :thumb:

Or, "If you have played rugby for three seasons and have not been injured, then you are due."

There are somethings you can control and some things you can't control. You will get differeing opinions on this -
You need to get in/stay in shape. Anything you do could cause injury. You can't put your life on hold because you got an appointment.

Do injuries occur? Yes - a classmate of my daughter's was deferred a year because he blew out his knee two weeks before beast. It wasn't doing a sport either. Stuff happens. Go on with your life, stay in shape and be smart.

BTW - WP has a very good rugby team - are you thinking of trying out?

Just wondering

I have the stories about being deferred for a year due to an injury. What do the students do for that year (in addition to rehabbing their injury). Take courses at the local college?

There was a kid who fell getting off the bus on R day at AFA and was sent home. You can't stop living because of the "what-ifs."

You can't live in a box because of this.

In this case, however, I wouldn't risk it.

Then again, that's just me. I wouldn't want to ruin my chances of getting in by messing up my knee. Seen it happen many times to athletes.

Two years ago I knew someone who had an appointment to the AFA in November, ran track in the spring, got injured, and then couldn't go to the AFA because he needed surgery. :frown:
