DS completed his interview yesterday and is now eagerly awaiting a decision (he’ll be considered on the second board). He’s been accepted early action to a few high priced private schools and lower priced state schools. Does anybody know whether the army offers a mix of 3 and 4 year offers to candidates based on school price (e.g. 3 year winner to university x, and 4 year winner at university y), or is the scholarship type (3 or 4 year) fixed across schools for each applicant?

I'm pretty sure the cost of tuition doesn't come into the decision. I know it doesn't for Air Force and NROTC but not absolutely certain on AROTC.

Okay, thanks @kinnem. The cost of private vs in-state is insane (150k+ Over 4 years), so surprising they wouldn’t take it into consideration.

My DS was offered a scholarship to both an in state public and a pricey oos private for same number of years. I don’t think it’s a factor.

Agree with @tgti , not a factor. DD also AROTC, and school choice did not seem to play into decision as we had not yet heard from any schools when she was awarded. As suggested by many on this forum, just be sure your DS is committed, so that you can cover tuition, if he leaves AROTC.

Of his top 3 schools, two are high priced private and one is high priced out of state. Lower down he has 3 more affordable schools (one in-state and 2 western student exchange schools). I told him to list the schools in the true priority order without regard to cost. Curious to see how it plays out.

Exactly the approach DS took with his. Hope results come out before Christmas!

Cost of tuition is not a factor in Army ROTC scholarships - they all pay full tuition, academic fees and books plus a stipend. However, be aware that if your DS or DD is accepted at their first choice school, but is offered a 4 year AROTC scholarship to their second choice school = they can request and almost always are allowed to transfer the scholarship to their first choice school = BUT the 4 year scholarship will be reduced to a 3 year scholarship and the student will have to pay for the first year. This has been the experience at my alma mater's Financial Aid office. Depending on the school, they may try to offer offsetting merit or financial need aid to encourage the transfer - you have to ask though.
