I heard tell that West Point will offer 3 year ROTC scholarships to the QNS kids like myself? Have those already been given out?

Yes, my DS was offered this after he was QNS his first year. I'm not sure how many are offered. My son enrolled in the ROTC program (which was his plan B), but didn't use the scholarship because it began after the first year...and he reapplied and was selected.

Are you able to be a contracted cadet your freshman year with a 3 year ROTC scholarship? Or do you have to wait until the scholarship kicks in to contract?

If you have a 3 year AD AROTC scholarship, before you contract, you must pass DoDMERB (if didn't already pass through the SA process), plus you must pass the APFT. If you are a 3 year, you MIGHT be offered an additional 1/2 year if you do well during the fresman fall semester. Again, this depends on the availability of additional AROTC campus based scholarship funds, plus the cadet's performance. This happened to my DS two years ago.

You won't get ALL the gear that contracted cadets get during that first year, such as PT uniform, and other "non-essential" uniforms and equipment.

I think it depends how how much money Cadet Command has left as the cycle gets closer to ending. My DD received her TWE in the middle of March last year and received notice from Cadet Command on May 10th offering her a 3 year ROTC scholarship. She accepted and moved on with plan B. She was classified as a scholarship cadet, but would not actually contract until the start of her second year. She reapplied and was accepted this year so she never got to the contracting step.

I also talked to classmates that are currently serving as PMIs at different ROTC units last spring to understand the entire process. The units want to give everyone that is performing a scholarship but are constrained by budgets. They do not know how much money they will have from one year to the next. Some years they were able to offer multiple upgrades and other years they could not offer any.

You just need to show up, make good grades, do well in PT and be an active part of the unit. Things will work out as long as you do your part.

^ THIS! A thousand times, this.

Choose an AROTC school, you can afford, even without the scholarship, work hard, get good grades, participate in EC's and the chance of earning a campus based AROTC scholarship will be optimized.

BSCAR, soon (sometime in the next four weeks), you will receive an email from Cadet Command. CC will inform you whether it will award you a three year scholarship. Even if CC informs you that it has no scholarship for you, you may be contacted by ROOs at local universities and colleges. I think you live in Wisconsin. Last year, Marquette University reached out to DS2 and offered him an AROTC scholarship. DS2 received other AROTC offers from in-state Catholic private universities and out state (Wisconsin) public universities. As I mentioned in a separate post, DS2 chose a different path this year. Currently, he is waiting to hear from WP, although he is moving forward with plan "b." DH and I will happily "donate" the deposits to plan "b" school, if the BFE lands on our doorstep.

West Point gives the list of QNS candidates to Cadet Command. The thought being that since West Point has determined that they qualified for West Point, they are therefore qualified for an AROTC scholarship.

This is SO logical...I'm surprised the Army does it and disappointed that the Air Force doesn't. My son applied to AFA, USMA and both ROTC programs. I was surprised that there was SO many different deadlines and hoops to jump through for all- and that they weren't more uniform- especially within the same service. He is 3Q for West Point and waiting, but that window is mostly closed and he has already received a 3 year AROTC scholarship based on the ROTC application. Got a TWE from AFA and nothing from AFROTC.

My DS got a 3 year AD Scholarship ROTC back in February or later. He was hoping for West Point then in March he was notified that they upped his 3 year to a full 4 year stateing he was in the top 1000 applicates . On April 14 he received an online TWE from West Point.
But he is thrilled with his plan B. Not sure if West Point had any thing to do with him getting the extra year.
