3Q on NWL

So when someone gets an appointment off the NWL, will his/her MOC still call? I ask this because I am curious about whether those who are posting on the appointment threads are all slate winners -- or could they possibly be from the NWL (it's now the latter part of March) but still given a call by their MOC (whether or not their appointment was charged to their MOC). I guess put another way, if you are one of the lucky 150 who get an appointment off the NWL, will you be told that fact?

Thank you.
1. The MOC is given 72 hours to notify the candidate before USMA makes notification, regardless of type of appointment. If the MOC's policy is to call appointees, the MOC will call no matter how you got the appointment.

2. The difference between the 150 Qualified Alternates appointed from the NWL and the 200 - 400 Additional Appointees appointed from the NWL is that the 150 must be in Order of Merit. The 200 - 400 may be out of Order of Merit.

Hey I'm not sure if this is what you are asking but I got a call from my MOC yesterday about my appointment to USMA. I'm still new to this forum so I am not sure if this is the "slate winner" you are talking about.

I originally received a letter (on the portal) stating I was fully qualified and placed on the NWL. About a month later I received an appointment. My MOC did not call -- I simply checked my portal and the appointment was there. A congratulatory email from my RC followed a few hours after I saw the appointment.

If you are 3Q with Nomination and were placed on the NWL, then receive the TWE, does that exclude you from getting an appointment to the prep school? The TWE letter said nothing about the prep school.

You are 3Q with a nom and you've already received your TWE?

In general, USMAPS and the prep scholarships are targeted to those who were not found fully qualified, but USMA wants them and is willing to help them become fully qualified.

You were already found fully qualified - no small feat - but there is not enough room in the class for all fully qualified applicants with noms. I would assume prep will not be offered.

My kid was 3Q in November (senatorial and service connected nom) and placed on NWL then but received the TWE (via portal) on 3-4-21. I guess of the 10 names the senator submitted to USMA, my kid wasn't at the top of those ten. His 1280 on the SAT was the weakest part of his application. Oh well, it's not stopping him from becoming an officer. He is actually pretty excited about Plan B....an AROTC (1st board) national scholarship, plus room and board scholarship from the school, 6 K in merit scholarships and 24 credits from dual enrollment that will transfer. Sad that after all that work that he didn't really get much of an explanation from his FFR about what they didn't see in him that they saw in those on his slate that got an appt. Life goes on!

Thanks for sharing your son's experience. Sounds like an amazing Plan B!! Take care.

Good luck to you too! If you haven't received word it is probably a good sign! You are still in the running! And if you don't get an appointment, there are still plenty of ways to get to where you want to go! Hang in there!

This is not exactly true for USMA. USMAPS only accepts candidates that were not deemed qualified in some area. The Prep scholarships are targeted to Qualified Candidates that did not gain admission in the cycle. If you received a 3Q letter you will not be considered for USMAPS. You may be considered for a AOG scholarship.

Thank you for clarifying - I read the website with a predisposition to think otherwise. There is definitely wiggle room.

“The West Point Preparatory Scholarship Program supplements the United States Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS), and provides a broader-based preparation than USMAPS. While USMAPS teaches only math, English, and the SAT, the WPPSP requires candidates to take a full course load. The WPPSP offers an alternative path to West Point for candidates who do not need the specialized preparation provided by USMAPS, but can benefit from an additional year of academics.

The major advantage of the private preparatory school is the small class size, intense and concentrated instruction, and required study five evenings every week. The level of academics is significantly higher than at a public high school, and is an excellent transition before coming to West Point.”

And:
“Each January, the Director of Admissions prepares a list of candidates who have demonstrated outstanding qualities as scholars and leaders, but who might not be deemed “best qualified” because they come from a highly competitive congressional district.”

Got the TWE the end of last week. He's been told by everyone he has spoken with that his application was very competitive. I would say the weakest part of his application that could be improved is leadership examples. He was hoping that prep school or even an AOG scholarship is an option. Still waiting to hear from Naval Academy, Coast Guard Academy, and AFROTC. He has his plan B and plan C's in motion but an Academy appointment or prep school appointment is first choice.

Thanks for sharing this info. Good luck to your son on all his alternate plans. I am sure it will all work out. Take care.

The guidance to the Field Force here is clear but I think the wiggle room comes on what is the floor to disqualify a candidate and offer USMAPS.

Agreed. Bottom line - USMA and AOG can act in any way they choose with a program if it supports the USMA mission.
