What is 3Q? Meaning, is this an official notification or qualification letter that shows up in a candidate’s portal? Many threads reference 3Q, but the literature doesn’t mention this as a final process milestone. I only see nomination + CFA + Med Qual + Demonstrated Leadership + Academic Aptitude = Appointment, as part of the ubiquitous formula.

Said differently, does every BFE recipient also receive a 3Q letter?

3q means that you are qualified academically, physically, and medically. This means you have passed DodMERB, passed the CFA, and have been deemed acceptable based on grades & extracurriculars. Everyone who receives the BFE must be 3q, but from my understanding, admissions doesn't always notify everyone a 3q letter.

Nomination + CFA + Med Qual + Demonstrated Leadership + Academic Aptitude = Appointment about half the time.

3Q is an informal term and will generally not be referenced in official correspondence. The letter informing you that you have been placed on the NWL is essentially the "3Q" letter. It informs the candidate that "....the Admissions Committee has qualified your file..... all qualified applicants are place on the National Waiting List until appointments are made."

Every appointee and all qualified applicants should receive this letter. In some cases a candidate may receive an appointment before the 3Q letter; it's possible that the letter won't be sent - why send a 3Q letter if an appointment has already been sent. This has no significance and is just part of the administrative queuing and process flow.

I researched and found the following links that are very relevant to this thread.

NWL vs. 3Q

West Point FAQ (Great resources!)

I am learning everday about the comprehensive processs to be a West Point cadet! It's an amazing endeavor I have never experienced and expected, but....I am enjoying it very much.

If it were too easy, I would not choose West Point.

My son received a 3Q letter in his USMA application portal yesterday. He also received an LOE about a month ago. No nomination at this point as he still has a MOC interview this weekend. Not reading too much into this (neither is he), but I am thinking that this is at least a "positive" step in the process moving forward.

Congratulations! It is a very good sign.

Can I ask a question?

Whe did your DS complete an interview with FFR and finish his WP application?

I am in the same situation as your son, best of luck to you!

I'm certain that he had his FFR interview on November 10th - I think he completed his application at the very end of October.

In reading several posts about the LOEs/LOAs/3Qs it really depends on the region. I could be wrong or misunderstanding that. DS had his FFR interview middle of July and was finished with his app middle of September. He received an LOE on the portal end of September (authorizing overnight, which he hasn't done). He received the 3Q letter in the mailbox about a month after that (not on the portal). It's my understanding from reading other threads each RC handles them differently. . .I have no way of really knowing if that's true, of course. That probably doesn't help much, but good luck to you!

To add to this, I received my LOE in the mail but it did not show in the portal. But, my 3Q showed in portal but I have yet to get the letter. Weird.
