Good evening everyone,

This is my 3rd attempt at getting accepted into the USMA. I am in college and also am in the AROTC program. I just wanted to get some feedback to see if I should continue on with my application or stick with the ROTC program. My main goal was always to become an officer in the Army, but West Point has never really left my mind. It stung the first time getting rejeted as a senior because I was physically qualified, academically qualified, and received a nomination that year. However, last year, I will admit that I lessened my chances by getting a 3.1 gpa in the first semester of college.

Current college GPA: 3.54 (most likely 3.65 after finals in a week)
Dean’s List
Cadet of the Month
SAT Superscore, Reading/Writing: 660, Math: 630

Regardless of the outcome, this will most likely be my last attempt.

Thank you

The biggest question you have to ask yourself is, "Has my file improved?". Have you been applying with the same SAT scores? They are low for competitive districts. What classes have you taken? It is difficult to assess your GPA without knowing what classes you are taking. Many who reapply think that the academy just needs to see your persistence. Persistence is nice, but unless you have done something to improve your file within your district, you chances for admissions will not improve. High school seniors with 1400 SATs are still going to beat you.

i would change to an ACT

Great. ACT is about time management during the test. Content is straight forward no tricks. Set target to get 30 on all sections. Set target to get 8-9 on Writing. I have a lot of respect for you doing this 3rd time. You certainly have passion no doubt. And you should chase your dream! As some of the posts said work on your weak areas to improve the Package. Please do that and you should be in a very good shape. Good luck!

That's an outstanding idea. If you surmise that your SAT score may be sub-par according to the Academies' preferences (indicated by several members of this forum above), it's not a shabby idea to attempt the alternate college placement test. As Patriot4Life suggested, some individuals perform exceedingly well on the ACT while the SAT fails as an indicator of his/her scholastic talent.

It can't hurt to try!

Very true. After getting 600/600 on the SAT I tried the ACT and got a 34. You never know until you try.

Have you applied for the ROTC nomination? it is listed on your portal and requires a form completed by your PMS. This will give you a chance to compete in a different category.

Do you really want to do 2 additional years of college to attend the academy? Do you really want to delay commissioning by 2 years?

Exactly.
If you just want a commission and to serve our country in the Army, you will look the same as the 2nd LT standing next to you, even if he/she is a West Point grad. Keep going, don't start over.

My son attempted three times before being accepted in USMA. His first attempt in his senior HS, Grey Stone Preparatory school (Kerville, TX), and ATM Corps Cadets (1 year) before accepted to USMA.
He might be two years behind in college graduation from his other peers in HS, but it is worth the wait and benefits/opportunities awaiting as a graduate from WesPoint.
My son wanted WestPoint since his was in 5th grade.

If you really want it, keep applying. You have time before you turn 23 to do it. The board looks at your overall accomplishment, not just your SAT. It is also makes an impression on the number of times you attempted into getting in. It conveys you want to be part of the WestPoint.

There is a cadet in my 2020's class who got in on his 5th attempt. There are other commissioning routes, if it's your dream to attend WP, don't give up

That cadet must have just squeeked in under the age limit.

Interesting, he could have easily congraduated from his civilian college

I know a current Plebe who had finished his junior year, ROTC. He is very happy here and currently has no regrets about delaying his commissioning. His reasoning was that years from now the delay in commissioning will not matter.

He is right, in the long term it makes no difference, but taking 7 full years of college is still a hard thing to do. Its not like you are going for your masters

There are many good colleges. There is only one West Point.
Yes but is it about being an officer or going to West Point. Do you know what they call the guy who came in last in his in his class in medical school ? The answer is Doctor. Same holds true for anyone who commissions from West Point or Rotc. Don’t get me wrong , for many people the choice would be to join West Point, at some point u have to go on with your life . I don’t begrudge the Junior Rotc cadet who finally made it into West Point . It is his life to choose , but is West Point or being in the military the end goal
