Hello, I got my 2 required letters of recommendation in (English and math) and I'm going to receive one from my Track Coach. Since I'm using the coach letter for my nomination applications, I figured I'd send it to Navy as well because I heard they accept an additional letter. My question is, where do I send them in and how do I send them? Are there any particular instructions I have to follow for this extra one? It's not an option on the official candidate Admissions Portal, and it's tough to find anything online, so could someone tell me how to submit this extra letter? Thanks.

If I remember correctly, it should show up at some point on your portal. It is all through direct email. You give Navy their emails, and Navy contacts them.

You need to email the regional director. (Regionxx@usna.edu) That additional letter will not be looked at if it is not unique from the others, it needs to offer a different perspective or it is meaningless.

Distinguish the traditional letters of recommendation from teacher evaluations. The evaluations are online, but the letters of recommendation are sent by regular mail. My recollection is that they are sent to admissions office, in care of your admissions officer. Have the author of the letter reference your candidate number on the letter, and it should make it to your file. If this is inaccurate I am sure a BGO will correct it.

Just a reminder ...Additional letters of recommendation are not required, not encouraged , and in fact could be discouraged (Don't send an Additional Letter from some high ranking friend of the family who barely knows the candidate -- Admissions doesn't care who your family knows). I've never heard of such letters making a difference in the Admissions process, but if you submit one, make sure that the writer really knows the candidate and adds something to the information that has already been submitted.

I honk OP was referring to a coach. My son's coach did send a letter, but mostly it was to confirm that son would be Capt of baseball team, which wouldn't occur until spring, and thus wouldn't be part of the application file until it was too late without the letter.

Actually on the application under Sports/Activities it asks you to list sports you have participated in or plan to participate in the coming year. That section also has you list varsity letters/awards/team captain or co-captain. That section is sent to the students guidance office for them to verify your activity, so you should be able to just list it there.

True, and my son did that with respect to soccer, which is a fall sport, and so he got confirmation from the counselor that he was captain; but baseball is a spring sport, and therefore he wasn't able to say he was captain because that sport wouldn't occur until after the admissions decision would be made. It was suggested that he have the coach confirm that he intended to make him Capt in the spring when the season started.

The question here is whether the coach can add anything useful to your DS's packet. If it is a school track coach, probably not, unless your DS did something truly extraordinary that no one else knows about. If the coach is from a club or organization outside of school and your DS's primary or only sport is with this coach, AND there is something unique about your son as a member of this club or team, then maybe it will help. Otherwise, not.

It could, however, be useful for MOC nominations, depending on their requirements.

So, I thought when I read over the information to apply for a VP nomination, that all info should be sent directly to the Academy. This includes 3 letters of recommendation. Is this information kept separate from the application file and used exclusively for the VP Nom?

The VP will send you a note that he requires nothing except the request for nomination. The VP then 'returns those nominations' to the service academy for the service academies to determine who will get them. No real paperwork is required except to request the VP nomination itself.
