DS did not win an AROTC National Scholarship, but was contacted by the ROO from his #4 choice and offered a 3 year AD scholarship earlier this week. He had already decided to go to this #1 school and join the ROTC program there, gotten a roommate, etc. So now, he doesn't' want to go to #4 school. Are these types of scholarships transferrable? And if they are, how does that work? He hasn't received anything in writing, just several emails and some phone calls. #4 ROO is awaiting his response.

I am having a dejavu moment! My daughter did get a 3 year AD national scholarship but on the third board. She had already decided on her #1 school, we paid the deposit and she had a roommate from her same high school. After getting word that she had gotten the scholarship for her #1, #3, and #4 schools, she was still pretty sure it was going to be #1. Then #4 called and said they could potentially do a 3 1/2 scholarship and even with out the school would pay room and board all 4 years, this was the second week of April 2016. The 4th choice school was the most academic school and closer to home than her first choice. Because it was close enough to home to visit we made her visit again, just be sure before she told cadet command which school she chose. She visited and changed her mind about school number 1, and ended up at school number 4. Yes we ate the deposit money from the first school, and her roommate had to get a new roommate, but she is now a 2LT and has no regrets about her decision. Your DS might still choose school 1, but if going to school 1 is going to incur more debt than school 4 for him or for you, relooking at it is worth it. He didn’t have that scholarship as a consideration when he chose his school, now with it in play it might be a game changer, if in the end you can afford school 1 and it is a better fit, then staying the course is great, but if a debt free degree is only available with one school over the other, it might be worth new consideration. Good luck and please keep us posted!

Thanks for the response! Luckily, we have been saving for college since he was born so he will have no debt regardless of where he chooses. He's now got his heart set on #1 school, but as his parents we think he should take a look at #4 because he does want to do military. He was still going to do ROTC at #1 school, just without any upfront commitment. He was just wanting to know if it would transfer as the #4 school is 10 hours away and #1 is 3 hours away.

Something to consider as he navigates this important decision, is that even with a 3 year AD scholarship, he will not contract until his sophmore year. Even if he had a 4 year and contracted year 1, he has until 1st day of sophomore year to walk away with no commitment. Choosing the school that is the best fit academically and also for other intangible reasons (like getting to come see you on the weekend if he wants too), are things that might be worth sticking with school 1. He also might be offered a 2 or 3 year at school 1 if he takes ROTC seriously and budget allows. Other than the college savings can go for something or someone else, he will still be able to pursue his military career at school 1’s ROTC. The only other thing that I can think of as a big factor is, are either one of them not a host school? ROTC can have satellite schools, meaning PT and/or classes might be at a different campus. Some schools have their own classes and PT even if not a host school, but these are things to consider. Having to drive across town before the sun rises and then again drive across town for evening MS classes can be a hardship over a 4 year period. Just something for him to consider lifestyle wise for his 4 years.

And kudos to you for thinking and planning ahead for a debt free degree for your son!

No, that offer is not transferable. Cadet Command has given some additional 3AD scholarships to some ROTC Battalions to offer to whomever they want for attendance to their school.

Thank you everyone. He decided on going to #4 school. He's actually "in love" now. :)
Well this truly is a deja vu moment, my daughter going from registered to attend school #1 then changing late April to school 4 and was so excited! At least for her, it turned out to be the best decision, as she is now done and a 2LT she has no regrets! Good luck to your son, I am sure it will turn out just as amazing for him!
