4/c at CGA. Ask any questions!

Well....she already had a really strong application. But, during AIM, the cadre discuss how the AIMSTERs are doing. Her cadre told her she was one of the top. Based on his verbal feedback, I am assuming he wrote something similar in his evaluation. I do not know if she got to see the actual evaluation or not.

Lots of AIM kids, lots of cadre, lots of "strong" applications. I would think that it would be almost impossible for one member of the cadre to compare their "AIMsters" to others that they did not lead.

Whatever the facts might have been, it all worked!

Thanks Baseball Guy.. My DS did apply EA but will likely need a waiver. I am a little concerned he has not yet been contacted to initiate his DODMERB and he submitted his EA application all complete in early October. Wondering if that length of time is sign that he might not be a good EA candidate
Its just the end of October now; My DD went through a 5 month process getting her waiver. There is still plenty of time for the process to unfold. The length of time is no way a signal of being a good candidate...its just a lot of "moving parts". Hold on for the ride.

I completed AIM this past summer, and according to the admissions classes that we undertook, around half of the incoming class to CGA were former AIMsters (please correct me if I am wrong). Also, many of the AIM Cadre were prior AIMsters; in fact, 5 out of the 6 cadre for my platoon completed AIM. It is also a thing you are able to check off on the CGA application.
Rising 2C cadre make requests for what they would like to do for a summer cadre assignment, but the ultimate decision comes from leadership as to their placement. The fact that 5 out of 6 cadre from your platoon completed AIM may be because that was simply something they had experience with and would therefore be a good fit to lead. AIM gives a potential candidate insight to what it is like to be at the academy and that leads them to a better understanding if going there would be a good fit for them.

Hey guys, I'm a 4/c here at the academy. I can attempt to answer any questions you have about the schoolyear or cadet life.
Hi! Thanks for taking the time to answer questions. I have a few.... Are females allowed to wear makeup? What is the dress code during the evenings and weekends? How often are you allowed to be off of the campus? Is there any possibilities to attend a local community church or only the chapel on campus? Are there any clubs for bible studies or similar things? Thanks in advance!

I'm not a cadet, but from visiting the Academy a couple times, I've learned that there's a Christian club called Officers Christian Fellowship that does Bible studies, and I think most of their events and off-campus. You can look them up on Facebook for more info. There's also a Catholic club, but I don't know much about it.

There's a minivan that 1st class cadets can drive to get to churches around New London. I think the majority of cadets who attend church go off-campus, but there's a Protestant and Catholic service at the chapel. This was all a year or two ago, so things could've changed since then.

Thank you! I looked up the FB page and messaged one of the admin of the group. I appreciate your information.

OCF meets Friday nights on campus for worship and songs. There are also retreats and other weekend activities at Shepherd's Fold, which is just a few miles off campus. Some cadets participate in bible studies and have prayer partners.

Yes you can wear makeup, although probably not something you would care about during swab summer.

Liberty varies by year. For a 4/c that is generally Saturday from noon til 1am and Sunday 7:30am to 6pm. Liberty attire varies per year too. As a 4/c, you have to wear trops (tropical uniform) within a certain radius of CGA. Liberty is never guaranteed, and your company also might have duty on a weekend day. During the evenings you generally wear study gear which is issued CGA gear like shorts, T-shirts, etc.

Any current cadets can jump in if any of that is no longer accurate.

Yes, females can wear makeup, except during swab summer.

During the evenings, you generally wear "running suits" - basically a pair of track pants (or shorts, except to eat), an Academy issued t-shirt, and optionally a sweatshirt or matching track suit jacket. On weekends, it varies - 1/c and 2/c can wear civilian clothes, 3/c can wear "rec gear" (khakis/khaki shorts, a polo, boat shoes/duck boots, and optionally a sweater and/or jacket), and 4/c wear the dress uniform of the season.

1/c get liberty Thursday, Friday, and overnight from Saturday to Sunday. 2/c the same, minus Thursday; 3/c the same minus overnights; and 4/c only on Saturday and Sunday.

Going off base to religious services is allowed, and one of the jobs of the Chaplains at the base is to help facilitate a place where you can practice your religious beliefs as you desire, even if that place isn't on base or in whatever religion the Chaplain practices. I would say a large majority of underclass especially go to church on base since it is easier, but some go off. It's easier to get off base as a 1/c, but many still stay on for church.

How does spring break work for the 4/c?

Everyone generally has leave after their last class/LMO (last military obligation, leave is 5-13 Mar this year) and like most leaves and/or liberty you have to be back by the time stated depending on class, leave/liberty type, etc. That is normally in the evening on Sunday prior to the day that CAP begins or the first day of class, depending on the type of liberty/break.

If you are a spring sport athlete, some teams may travel and play for their spring trip during that time as well.

You can see the calendar here:

Congrats to all new appointees!

That brings up a good question. Is baseball at CGA considered a spring sport? Do cadets participating in baseball actually have a traditional spring break or are they doing team activities?

Baseball is a spring sport at USCGA. Depending on COVID and other factors, the team will likely be on a baseball trip during spring break rather than having the cadets on the team on a "traditional" spring break.

Can a cadet carry a pocket (or clip) knife? Thinking of getting one as a gift, but if not allowed, maybe not.
