4-Year NROTC Scholarship Acceptance Thread

Sorry ... what is MSI and NPP? I don't see those on the acronym list.
MSI= Minority Serving Institution
The NROTC has a limited number of scholarships available for students to attend MSI schools, which encompass Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), High Hispanic Enrollment (HHE) schools, and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSI).

If you are interested in attending one of the schools listed below, you must respond positively to the MSISR question and list at least one of the MSI schools in your top 5 choices on your national scholarship application in order for the application to be processed.

NPP= NROTC Preperatory Program
The NROTC Preparatory Programs (NPP) Office mission is to expand NROTC opportunities to produce a more capable and representative Naval Officer Corps. NROTC preparatory scholarship reservations (NPSR) supports that mission by partnering with educational institutions to enhance underserved or disadvantaged scholarship applicants' moral, mental, and physical foundations to prepare them for success in the NROTC program.

I'm not sure this is the correct thread. But in accepting a scholarship how does the funding work to the school? My son is telling me we pay and then get reimbursed? It's alot of money to come out of pocket up front and I'm thinking there had to be another way?
The funds are paid directly to the school by the Navy. The unit provides a list of scholarship students to the bursar's office, so they know to expect payment from them, not your student. This is assuming the scholarship requirements are met and activated; i.e. cleared DODMERB and passed the PFT on arrival.

MSI = Minority Serving Institution or sometimes called MSISR. Basically, a scholarship which is applied for an HBC or an HHE.

NPP equals Naval Preparatory Program......this is a copy or clone of the USNA NAPS program, where the university pays the first year and if the student does well, NROTC then applies a 4 year scholarship (total of 5 years)

Assuming the person has been offered a scholarship, AND has been cleared by DODMERB "or" received a waiver, the university is paid by the NROTC unit through Naval Service Training Command. The unit notifies the university of the scholarship and transmits a letter along with the 61 Report of all scholarship awardees. Each university is slightly different, but that is how we do it for GWU. It is best to contact the NROTC unit or the university financial aid office since they handle requests for delayed or deferred tuition payments pending a scholarship or financial aid offer.

What is the relevance of the “backup” board from April 24-28 to those applicants who have not yet been given a decision?

Has anyone been awarded a NROTC-MO scholarship to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University? I didn't see any on the lists.

Hoping for advice and assistance on a few questions. This is my family's first foray into NROTC.

Snapshot: My 17 year old son decided to graduate high school after his junior year (this year) and surprised us by getting an ISR (an early NROTC scholarship) He is a good student, 1500 SAT (780 Math, 720 Verbal) and ~3.8 unweighted GPA and 3rd in his class, 12 AP courses, Eagle Scout, etc. However, he applied to 7 competitive schools and only has 1 Waitlist so far. This is obviously a tactical error he/we made by not applying to more schools and/or by allowing him to graduate early but there is a real possibility that he doesn't get into any of his 7 schools. Initially, his attitude was that he would just wait another year and go to our local state school and try it again for his preferred schools. But now, of course, he really wants to go to college a be NROTC.

Questions:
1) Are there any schools that will consider a late or rolling application for a well qualified NROTC student?
2) Can the NROTC scholarship be award be delayed by a year or does he need to apply again?
3) Can NROTC advocate for someone on the Waitlist?

Any information is very helpful, thank you. I was USNA and his Mom went Navy OCS. His brother is going to be USNA Class of 2027 so we are a Navy family, just with no experience with NROTC.

Go down the list of Navy schools and see how many of them don't have an application deadline. Take Eastern Michigan University for example. Apply there and be part of University of Michigan NROTC, and then try to transfer to UM for sophomore year. It is the "cross-town" schools where you will have the best luck at finding a rolling admission school that is still taking applications for August 2023.

Much appreciated, thanks for taking the time to read and for the advice. We'll start looking!

Update on Navy ROTC at Embry-Riddle:

Today, DD received an email from Pensacola that she was "Moved off the Waiting List" for placing her National Scholarship at ERAU. She politely declined.

Initially she interviewed and ranked Purdue (1) as her top choice, but was waitlisted for her Aviation Major at Purdue. ERAU was her second choice, but was told the NROTC program was full in early February. She moved her scholarship to her third choice, Auburn University. We visited Auburn and that sealed the deal. Auburn blew EARU out of the water. We all fell in love with AU; it was over the top organized, historical, solid technical/engineering, and the NROTC Unit very welcoming to her. She is keen on participating in Color Guard and Flight Team. WAR EAGLE!!

Just wanted to update those that might be on the ERAU NROTC waiting list.

Beware: My relative went to Auburn on an AFROTC scholarship. He went there as a normal, middle-class suburban kid. He came back drinking PBR, wearing a big belt buckle, and had a number "3" license plate on the front of his car (which had transformed into a pick-up truck).

While I placed summary stats in a couple places this cycle, I am placing a quick summary here before heading out for the weekend. The most recent board selected 175 for 4 year Navy Option and an additional 5 Nurse Corps.

There were some alternates that were notified but not the full list. They are going to wait for this last board to send out the final alternate list.

And for the GW cross town folks, we had 11 selected from this board. We're almost at capacity but still some room 😎
