I'm a little confused as to how the 4-year ROTC scholarship works and have a few questions about it. I'm applying for AROTC and am a rising senior in highschool

Does the 4-year scholarship always cover either tuition or room+board, or is it based on the total cost?

Does the AROTC scholarship apply to any school that has an Army ROTC program?

Thanks,
Km04

Yes, the AROTC scholarship applies to any school that has an AROTC program. However, when you win a scholarship, you will only be granted up to 3 schools to apply YOUR scholarship to.

The Army ROTC scholarship can be applied to tuition or room and board. One or the other. That said, SOME schools actually offer room and board to ROTC scholarship winners so you can end up covering both categories. One such school is Drexel. It is in a consortium with UPenn, however UPenn does not offer the room and board benefit.

Most apply the ROTC to the higher figure of the 2 and then some get lucky and also choose a school that picks up room and board. There are also other scholarships kids get so they can sometimes pool together and just play the math to the best solution. If you search the forum I believe there was a report posted which captures some of the schools that offer the room and board piece. I am not sure if it is 100% complete or accurate so you may want to investigate with the schools you are applying to.

And yes ..... if I recall the Army has you rank your 7 top schools. They then match you and your scholarship up to one of those units. One needs to be a state school. That does not obligate you to a state school, however. It is also possible to apply to relocate your scholarship following admission if that is necessary.

Is it always my top schools? Or is it possible that I'll get into my top school but not be able to use the scholarship at that school

@Km04 No, the scholarship is not always awarded to your top schools. It is possible that you can get into your top school but not be able to use your scholarship there, although you can attempt to transfer it to your top school. At some point Army can run out of scholarship slots for that school, especially for very popular AROTC colleges.

Not all ROTC programs work the same in this regard. AFROTC allows you to take the scholarship to any college with an AFROTC program, within the terms of the type of scholarship you are awarded. NROTC allows you to take the scholarship to your first choice school (although some paperwork may be involved). This is a change for NROTC for this year's freshman that I assume will continue into the future. I mention these not to indicate these are better than AROTC, but to point out that each service runs it's program differently. You cannot assume that something that applies to one program applies to them all.

Keep in mind if you choose to have your scholarship applied to room and board it is taxable whereas the scholarship is not.

Also some schools have "other" scholarships over and above National and battalion level. DS received a $5,000 scholarship (I don't recall the name) his freshman year payable to his student account . $2500 first and second semester. The money was not taxed and since he was on a 4 yr national and owned the school nothing he was given a check for $5k.

Also Army ROTC places a cap (I believe it is $10,000 a year*) on Room and Board if you use the scholarship for that purpose whereas there is NO cap on college tuition and mandatory fees.

Some schools offer free room & board to Army ROTC scholarship winners.

Norwich University in Northfield, VT & Stonehill College in Easton, MA are two I know of offhand.

I'm certain there are a lot more. In fact you look it up right here:

There are even some schools that will offer 4 years of room and board even if the cadet receives a 3 year AD scholarship which the Army gives many more 3 year scholarships than 4 years.

I am sure it likely depends. My DD got all of her top schools in order. That may have been a fluke as it is not guaranteed but they do seem to be paying attention. It is also discussed in your interview. That said, her scholarship offer was awarded after 1st block review.

Yes, it's either tuition and fees or room and board. As stated R&B has a $10,000 annual cap ($5,000 a semester) and there is not cap on tuition and fees.

If awarded you will normally receive the offer for three schools. The biggest part is to accept the scholarship before the deadline and a little known option is the ability to transfer the scholarship once awarded. A scholarship transfer is normally fairly easy to justify and receive, non-application to a college is not justification to transfer your scholarship.

DS was awarded a 4 year to his 1st and 3rd choices but NOT to his 2nd, so it will vary depending on the schools.
