I'm a rising sophomore with a 4-year Scholarship, but I wasn't able to medically qualify with DoDMERB my freshman year, so I had to pay the full tuition cost. However, I'm ready to contract at the start of this coming semester. Will I still receive the benefits from my scholarship for my first year even if I wasn't contracted yet? Or is that tuition and stipend money lost?

Depends on branch pf service I think. For NROTC, your scholarship is activated upon DODMERB clearance. You can double check with your unit though. Sometimes there can be exceptions.

DS was in similar position for AROTC. He contracted at the beginning of his sophomore year and received none of the benefits from the first year, effectively turning the 4 year he was initially awarded in to a 3 year.

Stipend starts the day you contract, so you will get none for your first year. For the freshman tuition, your program can submit a request for retroactive payment of the scholarship. However, those are rarely approved, and you have to prove that the delay in contacting was caused by the DODMERB, ROTC program, etc and not by you.

Common theme is DoDMERB, Command Waiver Authority, Surgeon General and now MHS Genesis with MEPS. You are not alone nor the original poster:(
