5 out of 32 leaving?

I agree with cmakin ... zombo year was definitely the easiest. 1st quarter (we were on a quarter system then) was the moderately difficult to get through but after that it was all downhill through license exams. I had very few classes after lunch and was able to join the commuter club. Could it be that I actually had something resembling a "normal" college experience for those six months?!?!?!?

Actually I found both Second and First Class Years ..

I am dated like cmakin, in that I tossed my hat at graduation almost thirty years ago but for me - both second and first class years were much easier than either plebe or third class years. Of course it didn't hurt that I had a big life changing personal event that occurred in the middle of third class year and went from chasing GPAs of 3.5+ to what ended up being an indestructable cum of 2.87 after Q3 Third class year. I did manage to graduate with a 2.98 GPA but since for the most part i wasn't too worried about my GPA, I was able to spend A LOT of time sailing on the offshore team (4-8 hours a day, 5-6 days a week).

That meant I had a relatively excellent second class sea year, second class year on campus and then the first half of first class year until I had to "buckle down" and find a job. Also like cmakin, I only drank "authorized" beverages but that too helped me stay sane along with the company of a group of guys who have remained great friends and a great mutual support network all these years.

Its NOT a course of action that I hope my son ever has to or contemplates following, and he hasn't seemed inclined to do so - at least not yet, but I think even if I hadn't had that event third class year and still been trying to graduate with a 3.5+ second and first class year would have been easier than plebe or third class year for me.

I feel like I should know this, being an old-timer now that "we've" survived 5 tris at KP... But I don't ... Can we check grades online or just the mids?
DS is making up some sea days this week so we haven't heard from him.

Nope - Just the mids. After plebe year they also don't send you the grades. Just saw a FB rant from DS to the effect that he keeps getting error messages when he tries to access his grades - and by the time it's fixed his ship will be out of range for him to go online.

Zombo. There is a term I haven't heard in a bit. And I was King Zombo, at that. Nothing but a one striper the entire 1st Class year. Now, having visited other "real" college campuses, I don't know if even that Free Gangway post bell ringing fourth quarter really ever approached a normal college, but I sure did enjoy spending afternoons fishing and water skiing with my 2nd Class year roomate who lived on the Island. That and afternoons at Hammerman's.

Only the Mids and plebes can access their grades. Apparently there was a problem with the web site, my DS told me that he had to try a few times but finally got on.

I guess the ease of a trimester depends on the student. My son has said that the 1st Class year is easier, especially now that he has two solid job offers. His class schedule is not that much easier, and with capstone that is added, but he does seem a lot more relaxed this year then previous years. Perhaps handling the stress for so long he's finally adapted? :yllol:

On the subject of Mids leaving and statistics.....does anyone have any data on the percentage of female mids that have washed out in the last few classes. Our DS is not aware of any that have in '13 or '14 ....... that is probably not accurate.........but, if it is , perhaps the young ladies that take on this challenge are more focused (as a group) then their male counterparts?

I would say that is highly unlikely. It would be difficult for your son to know as he hasn't seen half of his class over this year. Also depending on which split they are this may be the first time they are back in class which means a higher likelihood of failing out as it's less common to leave due to sea year grades. As to 2014, they've only been there for two tri's.

I would say that the last statement is an inaccurate generalization/stereotype.

to echo kp2001 ... just because your DS isnt aware does not mean it isn't happening. You tend to run in very small circles at KP. Even with the school being as small as it is, you can spend four years there and never meet a classmate if they are a different major, split and battalion.

I agree it is unlikely....said so....I am asking does anyone have any data? Agree, they run in small circles and DS does not know....I said it was probably not accurate. Again, asking does anyone know?

Not trying to start a flame war here. A conversation came up and DS said Hmmm....I am not aware of any female mids being disenrolled.....checked with a few of his tiny microscopic circle of friends and neither did they....so, again, Hmmm just wonder what the percentages are....no big deal just a question.

And my question, not a statment was was IF.....IF it just happend to be so (might not be, probably is not, not looking for it to be, don't wish it to be, could not imagine it being, Lord help us if it is) THEN, could it be possible there is a valid reason.....and yes, I used the term "could it be possible they are more focused?"

So, I'll ask again, simply, is there anyone out there that know whether the wash out rate (percentage that start vs. the number that graduate) is different among the two genders that attend KP?

I get the impression some think I am trying to sully the reputation of someone here.....I'm not. I am not trying to flame a gender. Not looking to change anything. Not looking for validation of anything. Just a simple statistical numerical question. The answer exists. And, it probably is not really a big deal. Just wondering out loud on a SA Forum because there are a few on here that have a great deal of data.......statistical included.

Thanks All

I don't think anyone was flaming anybody ... we actually agreed with your post that "its probably not accurate". We both were simply offering reasons why it would not be accurate and your DS not aware.

Great.....agree..... still would like to see a meaningful numerical response.

Anecdotally, in my DS's circle, I know of at least one female setback plebe year and one female disenrollment after first sea year for class of 2013.

I crunched some numbers for my son's class.. now mind you he graduated 6 years ago, so things might have changed a wee bit, but I would imagine they're fairly close.

graduated in 4 yrs/originally enrolled
total class 185/283 = 65.4%
males 159/245 = 64.9%
females 26/38 = 68.5%

Unfortunately I have heard from several mids that the women are treated differently as to setback/disenrollment and are given more leeway since the academy doesn't want to lose them, especially with the push for more diversity in the service academies. Doesn't make the guys feel too good.

Conversely, last year's top graduate was a woman with amazing grades! Under any circumstances, this is an extraordinarily difficult school for either sex.
