7th semester grades requested

Hello, my 7th semester grades were requested and I got a C in my AP Physics 2 class. All the other grades I got an A. There’s nothing amazing about my SAT scores (just over 700) and a couple science awards.

I got A’s in AP physics 1 last year so I don’t know of that will help at all.

How much will this dent my chances at appointment? Thanks.

My OPINION is that when they request your 7th semester grades, that means that you are "still in the running" for an Offer of Appointment.

From the point of an optimist, if you weren't someone that they are still considering, they wouldn't request any information and you would already have either an EMail stating that you have been rejected, and/or a TWE in the mail.

From the point of a pessimist, your situation may be tenuous at best. Best of luck with the wait for the news.

Agree with the above.

The A in your junior year may not be too influential at this point, because they already had that information from your transcript, yet they're still requesting your more current grades.

I don't think anyone can really say how much it will hurt your chances. Clearly, Admissions is interested in getting more information about you. How your grade in physics will influence their opinion is anyone's guess.

Good luck!

C's aren't good but they do know it's a tough class. It's hard to tell. Also, your math grades are even more important than physics. If you're taking AP Calc and doing well, that would help you.

Hey, life happens. It's not like Mids don't ever earn Cs, Ds, or Fs in Academy classes. There's still the "whole person" concept, so maybe if it comes down to you and just one other person for the same MOC slot, then it'd have to be a pretty glaring difference in the overall record. I wouldn't sweat it too much at this point.

I too got my first C (79 AP Calc) and they saw that after requesting my grades last week- the athletic dept called and said on account of my C in Calc they want to prepare me more at NAPS should I get rejected. So essentially my application hasn’t been accepted or rejected at the board but that C got me a spot at NAPS which is likely where they’ll place me I would say. So, not sure if that info helps, but I think my C affected me on the NAPS vs. direct appointment but it didn’t get me rejected!

I also agree, and the OP is not alone. DS had an 80 in AP Calc BC and a 78 in AP Physics C. He got his behind in gear and has A's now, but it may sting if his 7th semester grades are requested. On the flipside, one student on his slate dropped the AP Physics class. You are much better off taking the C than having dropped out of the class, imho. I believe the fact that they are asking is good news, and something in your file caught their interest. Good luck!

Ooh. Do you have to be a great athlete to be offered NAPS?

Not necessarily!

Interesting... One item of note:
Last week in Houston area they had a BGO dinner with come of the candidates. One of the Admissions officers from the office at USNA attended to conduct a Q&A - and he stated that one of the "differentiators" for them is looking at what candidates schedule for their senior year. When they see someone who is not challenging themselves with all the honors & AP courses they can. Some kids assume that since the bulk of admissions is based on their first three years, that maybe they can take it easier their senior year. They might decide not to take a higher level Math, or a Math at all, or go easy on the Science...take early dismissal; whatever. They said this sends very clear red flags to them - and this is discounted quickly. Just words to the wise for the future... Never slack off! Always challenge yourself!!

If you got over 700 on both Math and Verbal (especially Math) - that is very good. If this helps... DS won an appointment with a 1410 SAT (and 31 ACT, which converts to about the same) and I think his academics/college tests were likely his strongest points. Can't speak to your grade, though - DS got an 'A' in physics, but that was not AP Physics (but he did get an 'A' in AP Calc AB, though). I'm certain the USNA weighs AP higher so I wouldn't sweat it. And as others have said, it's great that they're requesting more info!

This comes up all the time. One "C" in one high school AP class by itself will will not change if you are academically qualified for admissions. Now a few "Cs" in Math/Science with lower than normal Math SAT score may raise some flags.

It is a fairly objective process where you are scored and compete against other individuals on the same nomination slate.

Do you get beat out by a person that never got a "C"? Maybe, but one piece of data does not make the entire file.

I also got a 7th semester transcript request as well in December from an email stating, "
Dear Candidate - The Admissions Board is requesting another official high school transcript showing your fall semester grades, when they are available. Transcript can be sent to: USNA Admissions Office

52 King George St.

Annapolis, MD 21402

Thank you and good day."
I've sent them and they received it 1-30-18, I think they are just trying to check on the progress of your grades and to see if you are taking important classes such as AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and AP calculus.

So, if the Admissions Board is sending the request, and they only determine whether the candidate is "qualified" to get a shot at the Nom/Appt Board, then exactly what does the request signify that they are on the fence about, and how common are these requests? It would seem to me that either your 6 semester grades are good enough or they're not, all on their own. In other words, what are they using the 7th grades for?

Also, has anyone who's had their 7th Sem grades requested been extended an appointment, or a LOA? Care to share your story?

Is is a bad sign if they haven't requested 7th semester grades? I am contemplating why they wouldn't request of them of everyone who is still under consideration - ?

No. It might be a good thing. They aren’t questioning whether you could consistently maintain your high grades in mostly STEM classes.

I, too, was rejected. it's alright though, since I am applying rotc. Best of luck to everyone else!

So, Jips, did you get the rejection first, and then get the request for grades after that? I'm sort of confused how that worked?

miscommunication occurred and basically, I’ve been rejected from another school and not USNA.
