So about 6 years ago my sons tells me he would like to attend the Air Force Service Academy. Let's fast forward to today. He was nominated by our NY Rep for the USAFA and has been awarded the NROTC scholarship to attend Rensselaer. I have many many many questions... what do we need to do next?

If your first question is what do we do next, your son can accept the NROTC scholarship. If he is later offered an appointment to USAFA, he can make his choice between the two and decline/change his mind on the other.

I recommend finding the Acronym List on the home page.
Use the Search function or google (with “service academy forums” in the search string). Similar questions come up every year.

And welcome!

Congrats! My friend's son at at RPI and is part of the NROTC program there (non-scholarship). Really likes the program there. If that's your Plan B to the USAFA, I don't think it's a bad option! Good luck that USAFA will come through for him.

Welcome Aboard

My six year old grandson calls me a newb at playing Fortnight. I said, boy I’ve been playing video games since Atari.

You’re in the right place here.
When I can't figure out the 4 different remote controls and the xbox king swoops in to save the day (with an eye roll and I sigh), I remind him that I had one of the first Atari 2600s when I was in 5th grade and could probably still kick his butt at asteroids, vanguard, missle command or space invaders (or any other game that followed for the next 10 years) and please just set it to HGTV for me.

So we just got the news that he has not received an appointment to AFA! Thank you to everyone who advised on having a good plan B! What kind of advice would you give about NROTC? Anyone attending or attended RPI? Keep the dream alive!

Be a willing, positive and top-performing midshipman in NROTC and at RPI. Be open and flexible to new paths and opportunities. NROTC may well be the perfect fit and feel “just right.” Re-apply or not, as it feels best to do. Give yourself permission to adjust dreams. That’s a life skill.

Grades UP
PT UP
Be VERY VERY careful around alcohol, less than no tolerance these days.
Be involved at the Unit

I might 'Know a guy' who will be staff at Indoc at Great Lakes

Totally agree with Capt MJ, reapply then if accepted, DS could "valid" many courses (more than right now) that could lead to more opportunities at the end of his USAFA career. But I believe you both are in a good place.
