A-Day and Parents Weekend - Cancelled for sure?

Hi All,

It's my understanding that parents will not be allowed at the Academy for A-Day, and that Parents Weekend is postponed, if not flat out cancelled for this year. But I can't find anything definitive on this. Does anyone know?

We were iffy on A-Day anyway, having received varying advice on whether it makes sense to go (we're from Western NY). But we'll be disappointed if there is no Parents Weekend.

Good luck to all of our Dear Sons and Daughters this week!

According to the 2024 Parents Facebook page, USAFA has not yet decided about A-Day and Parents Weekend as they are focusing on I-Day right now. Hopefully, we'll hear soon!

@Gyrfalcon Are you on the Parents page? We have the official USAFA Parent Liaison and admins sharing timely information with us. I'll DM you info on how to join.

I would still make any fully refundable or "low monetary/contract risk" reservations that you can.

We looked at is as 3 outcomes: PW cancelled, PW modified/same, PW rescheduled (probably not). So as a family, we decided to take the stress out of it and make Colorado Springs the Labor Day week vacation, regardless of whether we see DD or not. Other family are also flying in and we're going to do COS! We got an AirBnb for 09/01 to 09/08 and we'll wing it if there's any modification from there.

For A-Day, our strategy is simple: drop everything and get to COS anyway anyhow we can for those 2 hours. We are not making any plans in advance.

I also highly recommend the parent's USAFA Class of 2024 facebook page. Click OFF the notifications so you aren't getting facebook pings all day long, and proactively go to the page when you have time to read the posts. I like to sort by Recent posts, not by New Activity. That way you will see the official posts and not responses to older posts first.

We made flight reservations for PW (Labor Day) today. I haven't heard any official word on whether PW will occur but when talking to the Associate Athletic Director last week she did warn us of the possibility only season ticket holders may have access to the football game.

In the meantime, I highly suggest learning how to make awesome videos/slideshows out of your WebGuy photos! I made one for I-Day, and another for the BCT through 07/07/20. I used FlexClip's free video maker and included transitions, zoom features and music, and along with some carefully placed stock photos and text. Just drop in every single photo, arrange, splice in some stock photos and don't forget to dedicate to the grandparents on the cover!

And keep it very private. I only have 9 people that I share with. But 3 grandparents will watch these hundreds of times!

According to an email today:

" Team USAFA,

In order to keep our cadets and personnel healthy and safe under COVID-19 conditions, participation will look different for several traditional Summer and Fall events at USAFA this year. Below is an outline of the status of such events.

Marches Back from Jack’s Valley (18 and 25 July): Closed to participants other than personnel with a working role in Basic Cadet Training

Acceptance Day (10 Aug): Closed to visitors

Parents’ Weekend (5-6 Sep): A decision will be made COB 17 July

Thanksgiving Break (week of 23 Nov): A decision will be made COB 1 Oct "

We are working under the assumption that Parents Weekend and Thanksgiving Break will be canceled. USAFA has already canceled parents weekend for the Prep School.

For the new 2024 parents, although there is only one A-Day for your DD/DS during their Academy career, there are three more Parents' Weekends and Thanksgiving Breaks to look forward to.

As a 2020 parent, even though A-Day was very special, albeit very short, and the first Parents' Weekend was great; I would have gladly foregone both just to have personally attended their final milestone - Graduation and Commissioning.

Our DD also could not come home during her first Thanksgiving break since she was part of D&B and the Falcons had a football game that Friday.

Enjoy what times you can in the future with them knowing that the Academy is trying to take the utmost care of them.

I would be surprised if Parents' Weekend happens this fall. That being said, maybe they would be willing to host a Parents' weekend second semester. I don't have the slightest idea what is involved so its just wishful thinking on my part.

I was not counting on my Doolie coming home for Thanksgiving based on other posts I have read given we are not close by. But figured he would at least get off base to his sponsor though I think that is at jeopardy as well.

All just selfish thoughts of me as a parent as I suspect my DS is handling this way better than me :). Besides, I know USAFA is trying to manage this COVID period and they are just trying to figure out the best for all.
