Does anyone know the date for A-Day Class of 2022 yet? I know the Thayer Hotel website has listed a date, but that it may not be completely correct.

Also, can somebody give me an example of the weekend festivities, such as how long the parade is, how leave works, when we have to be back, etc. I know we can travel to NYC, but are we allowed to stay there overnight? Do cadets hang Out with only their family the entire time for much needed catching up and break or do they spend some of the time with New friends?

A day is August 18th. Here is what I understand from the mom’s Facebook page and the book A Mom’s Guide to Surviving West Point:

You will be released Saturday morning to spend time with your family. Apparently you will be exhausted and you will be bringing a great quantity of filthy laundry. You’ll go to the hotel or Airbnb with your family and you’ll eat, and sleep, and sleep some more while they do your laundry. You have to be back later Saturday night, and then you can leave again Sunday morning. You have to be back earlier Sunday evening, I think around 6 p.m. I don’t think it’s necessarily a rule that you can only be with your family, but talking to the two cadets that visited my DS recently, they said they really did just sleep almost the whole weekend, so you may not feel like going to NYC.

Not all cadets will bring laundry...neither of mine did, but many do. Usually you can travel 75 miles from West Point. My first cadet slept much of the time. My second one slept very little...he talked non stop and ate good food. Get to the parade EARLY if you want a seat. Cadets are released very shortly after the parade.

The parade starts around 10:00 and your cadet will be able to leave after which is between 11:00 or 12:00. They will have to be back that night and can leave again Sunday morning.

They have to be back by recall formation Sunday evening but its better to get them back a little earlier as they need to get ready for class the next day.

They have "extended walking privileges" which is 75 miles. Some will want to sleep, others will want to go to the mall, others may just want to hang out with family.

The best advice for parents is to be flexible and let your cadet make the decisions. While NYC is an option, it would be a pretty short trip.

Just to add a little to the conversation...My 2021 DD brought ALOT of filthy laundry. The hotel we stayed in did have a laundry room where we did some of it on Saturday but it was only one washer and dryer. On Sunday we took the rest of it to a local laundry mat to do the rest. We stayed in Fishkill and there is a laundry mat that will do the laundry for you. Wish we knew this at that time. We made sure she had some comfortable civilian clothes to where in the hotel room. Most of the weekend consisted of her talking, eating and sleeping. While she slept we did laundry. We also spent time shopping for a few snacks and supplies she wanted for school work and her room. Overall it was a great experience. Our family was full of pride and emotion as Beast is a tough time for the cadet and the families.

Does reorganization week come before or after A-Day weekend? I am assuming right beforehand because classes would start the monday following A-Day?

Is the bus system from USMA to NYC difficult to follow? In other words, are they available to shuttle cadets to and from NYC rapidly or often?

Reorganization week is before A-Day. It starts after march back. It is best to get back a few hours before required on Sunday to prepare for classes the next day and plebe duties.

There are chartered buses to and from airports for holiday leave. Otherwise, the best way to get to NYC is by train - Metro North to Grand Central is usually the easiest (from Garrison or Peekskill), but you can also use Amtrak (from Croton Harmon) to Penn Station.

Except during winter or bad weather, cadets can take the ferry for free to Garrison to catch a Metro North train. Check the West Point Harbor Craft Facebook page for schedule and details. Otherwise you can get a cab easily - on way back make sure to schedule a cab to avoid delays.

What a great experience - only Ring Weekend topped A Day for me!

A Day is different for each cadet. For both my 2018 and 2019 - no laundry (whew) - no naps (yay) - and really just wanted family time AWAY from the post - oh yeah - and a trip to B-Dubs! On both occasions - we had the opportunity to take other cadet's whose families were unable to attend off post with us to lunches, dinners, the mall, etc. All in all - just be prepared to be flexible!
