What is the best plan for A-Day as far as lodging? I stayed in Newburgh for R-Day, but I'm thinking if our cadet wants to come hang out w/ us this is too far away. There didn't seem to be too many places to stay that were close by. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Plebes have walking privileges during A-day weekend. They must return to the barracks at night, however in the past the Superintendent has allowed Plebes to go to their parents hotel rooms if they are outside the parameters of walking privileges. They understand there is not enough lodging inside walking privileges to accomodate everyone.

However..... plebes are only allowed to travel to their parents hotel. They may not eat at a restaurant unless it is inside the hotel if the hotel is outside walking privileges. They may not shop outside walking privileges (no going to WalMart). They may not be out of uniform when outside the hotel room.

All of that said - if you can afford a hotel room inside walking privileges; then A-day weekend will be much more convenient for you. If you like to camp, consider Round Pond out by Buckner.

There was a question on Monday, at the Sup's briefing in Washington Hall regarding A Day. They stated that this year, similar to years past, the cadets could accompany their parents to any hotel within 75 miles of West Point. Cadets must eat all meals in the hotel. Cadets will be available no later than 1:00 PM, and will need to be back before TAPS, which I think is 1:00 AM. On Sunday they will be available at 5:20 AM. They have a lot of time to spend with parents, so I do not think Newburg is a problem. Easy drive on the weekends.

I agree with JAM. We stayed at a motel in Highland Falls for A day and it was convenient but more expensive. We stayed in Fishkill for Plebe Parents Weekend. It was a nicer hotel for less money but the commute was longer. The cadets could come back to our room (no stops in between) based on the extended privileges for that weekend. But considering everything, I would stay as close as I could get.

sounds right. from memory they will generally not want to go back before TAPS.
Also, many are calling their parents before 6 am to come pick them up. In our hotel there were plenty of Plebes eating breakfast with their families prior to 6 am (including mine). They want to be out of the barracks.

Both R day and A Day

One vote for Fishkill. Hampton Inn. Cadet sleep in room watches TV eats food which you go get. Sleeps some more. on R day we left Siblings at home and brought them on A-Day. worked out great. Little bit of driving, ...but it is all becoming a memory quickly.

One vote for Newburgh.
We liked the Homewood Suites at the Stewart Airport for A-Day. A 'suite' room there is no more costly than regular rooms elsewhere (sometimes cheaper!).

A-Day we met up with our Cadet, ate lunch in Highland Falls and then headed back to the Homewood Suites. About a 30 minute drive. A little closer than Fishkill. All they want to do at this point is sleep. He went in the bedroom and closed the door and we hung out in the living area. It also has a small kitchen. So I made him his favorite dessert and packed it up for his boodle box. When he woke up we ordered delivery pizza. We ate and talked and he was back at West Point by midnight.

Word of advise: Don't show up at the gates at 10 minutes til 1:00am. There will be a long line of cars trying to get their cadets back for 1am Taps. We left plenty early to make sure that there was no problem with traffic.

Next morning we noticed several cadets at Breakfast. Their parents had gone and picked them up and brought them back to the hotel for breakfast (which is included at this hotel). We met DS for church, then brunch at The Thayer (they give cadets 1/2 off for the brunch!). He took us to the PX and let us buy him school supplies. :shake:

On occasions where they let the cadets have extended walking privleges, I think it is not worth paying $$$ for Highland Falls hotels. You have time to make the drive to the surrounding towns for nice hotels that haven't jacked up the prices. JMHO. :thumb:

Thanks for all of the information! We are staying at Homewood Suites for both A-day and Plebe Parent Weekend! I'm glad to know that the location works out.

Can they use the pool while they are with us? It's an indoor pool, right?

Thanks for your help!

No swimming in the pool.
Outside of the hotel room, they have to be in uniform (white over gray), even if they are going to the ice machine!
