Firstly, if you attend Boot Camp prior to your Junior year, you would retire 2 years earlier than a CGA grad.

Secondly, you would be commissioned as an Ensign over 2 years for pay purposes if not prior service. As a CSPI grad vs CGA grad, you would earn $24K more the first 3 years as an Officer.

Lastly, you can complete your CSPI active duty obligation in approximately 3.5 years vs 5 years for CGA grads.

One of downside is no CG financial assistance for the 1st 2 years as a CSPI student. Hit the Junior college circuit for the 1st two years in being less expenses and grading being easier, if finances are an issue.

Go Coast Guard, Semper Paratus

One more added perk in being a CSPI grad. CSPI grads earn their POST 9/11 G.I. bill after serving 3 years on active duty. CGA grads must serve an additional 3 years after fulfilling their 5 year obligation.

Another added perk. They just keep on coming. While in college, there are NO USCG courses to take, there are none available. The CG will teach you on what you need to know in OCS after graduation.

I forgot the most important point of all, regarding the CSPI program. Depending on the location of your college, your MONTHLY salary after boot camp as an E-3 varies from $3.5k (Mississippi) to $5.7k (San Francisco). Of course, all your college expenses are paid for including books and fees. Your are paid the monthly salary to cover your food, living arrangements and life style.

Don't forget, there are even colleges/universities in California, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and even the Virgin Islands.

But, you do have 2 requirements while attending college. Must wear your uniform 1 day a week on campus. Plus, help out in the recruiters office 4 hrs a week.

You must do something in earning your monthly $3.5k-5.7k paycheck as a full time student.

Is America Great or what.

I've always been slightly confused by the CSPI page. Does the university you attend have to be an MSI? If not, this is definitely something I'll look into, as I'm a freshman in college (my university isn't classified as an MSI) and a re-applicant to the Academy. Thanks for the info!

Yes, the schools must be on the MSI list but there are so many located out of the southern region of US. University of California at Berkeley is on the list. My former school of San Francisco State University (SFSU) is on the list and the monthly salary is $5.7k.

I can't think of a better scholarship than this. But be warned, the COLLEGE of your transfer credits must be approved by the USCG.

If you're interested, you more than likely need to transfer being your school is not on the list.

Call a local CG recruiter and get all the details.

By the way, I attended 3 community colleges, before graduating from SFSU. Had to graduate in 3 years. On my SFSU degree, it doesn't state the other colleges I attented.

Yes. I believe the University must be classified as an MSI.

All of California State Universities and 8 of 10 of the Universities of California are on the list including UC Berkeley.

That's what I thought. There's actually an HBCU in the same town as my university that I could transfer to and still earn the same degree. Just because I'm curious, what is the timeline like for applying to the program? I'm currently a freshman btw.

The deadline is usually the 1st week of Jan. All testing, physicals, paperwork, LORs, interviews, and other requirements must be accomplished by then. You have absolutely no time to waste. The deadline is only ONCE a year. Call your CG recruiter regarding the CSPI scholarship. Let us know what you find out, future Coastle.

Could you comment on the selection process vs applicant pool. How many apply vs accepted. When are you required to complete boot camp.

Thanks, old looper

isn’t CSPI done sophomore year for the final 2 years?

The CG will Pay UP TO the last two year of undergraduate studies. Not for graduate school. Obviously you go to boot camp at Cape May, NJ only during June and July before finishing up your junior or senior year.

Years past 20-60ish. This past year there was maybe under 25.

You can also apply your Junior year.

There is also CSPI-SLRP This can be applied after obtaining a bachelors and working towards a graduate degree.

Thanks for the feedback, the approved school list is a major bummer; Maybe with a low number of apps they'd consider waving it

Let me correct my self the numbers I posted were the numbers selected for CSPI. The actual amount of applicants were much more. There was a waiver for the schools I read somewhere. I will see if I can find it.

  • Schools not designated as an MSI may be considered on a case-by-case basis provided that they had a minority student population averaging at least 50% of the total student enrollment for the previous three years. If your school is not listed and you are unsure if your school meets the eligibility criteria, please contact your local recruiter.

2 Questions
  1. Are there specific College Majors the USCG are looking for such as the tier system in NROTC for in undergrads?
  2. You mention full time pay based on duty station location - Is the pay full active duty pay or prorated based on days served?
