Oh my,!! If you have the time, go read the Whip-Sawed Parents thread that has been revived from 2015. (it's under Service Academy Parents). Maybe you will be better able to keep the lump out of your throat or the tear finding it's way to your chin than I. Truthful, raw, insightful.
 
I agree—a worthwhile read. I read it a couple of weeks ago. Didn’t make it through the post and comments without tears falling. Summed up my feelings exactly. We aren’t a military family either, and nobody would have predicted that our DS would decide to pursue a service academy or AROTC. I am glad I’ve had a little while to get used to the idea and there’s still a long way to go, since he’s just begun the application process. No matter what happens, I feel like this experience has been so beneficial for him. He’s gained a lot of confidence and has benefited by pushing himself to do the best he can in all areas. We have also been pleasantly surprised by the support he’s received from so many people, especially current and retired military personnel.
