Good afternoon:

I was DQ’ed for D172.20 "Abnormal gynecologic cytology within the preceding three (3) years."

DoDMERB did not give me much more information. They said that I may request a waiver, however. When I asked about how to go about requesting it, they told me that my ROTC Detachment would initiate it upon my request. My Detachment supports my waiver request and is taking steps to do this now.

As far as my medical condition that got me DQ’ed, the abnormal pap was in January 2022. I had a follow-up colposcopy which came back normal and healthy in all respects. No precancerous cell changes or anything.

I guess I am wondering:
1) what are my chances of even getting a waiver for this? Should I just move on?
2) any estimated timeline for a decision?

As a final note, I was shocked to be accepted to a special Air Force program that allows me to do ROTC in two years during grad school and then commission upon graduation. So I am very disappointed that DoDMERB may be what stops me when I have already come so far in the process. :(

For general knowledge =

NOTE: DoDMERB performs and initial medical screening in accordance with DoD medical accession standards. It determines Q or DQ based solely on facts. Medical waiver authorities conduct an individual "risk assessment." They determine if the Service and the Academy/ROTC program can accept that degree of risk of the specific condition to successfully train; complete training; and be commissioned.

1. Your ROTC cadre told you correctly. For campus based applicants, the Det Commander requests medical waiver action.

2. "para 18e "Questions on the process" (DoDMERB website) = "We also can’t “speculate” what decisions will be rendered by the waiver authorities. They are totally independent from DoDMERB and make decisions based on their Service, program, training, and experience."

3. The timeline is the amount of time the waiver authority takes to render their decision. It depends on their worload --if they have to request additional tests, consults, documentation -- :wiggle:
